Poor Hurley Dog! Empty Poor Hurley Dog!

Post by bpaquet Wed Oct 08, 2014 9:57 pm

My friend's little Corgi, Hurley, got run over today. He was in the driveway, and my friend's husband didn't see him when he backed out of the garage. Hurley normally runs out of the way, but something unusual happened. Poor dog and poor man! Hurley's dad is beside himself. Sad

Hurley is in intensive care trying to get stable enough to have pelvis surgery tomorrow. He was getting prepped, and crashed bad. The surgeon sent him to the intensive care hospital in Richmond. He has contused lungs, but other internal systems seem okay. His pelvis is broken and needs to be screwed back together. It looks pretty grim, but he's at the best hospital around tonight and has a surgery appointment with one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the state tomorrow. Vibes would be appreciated.

Update is that he is more stable today, and is probably going to have hit surgery tomorrow. He is still in the hospital, and in very serious condition, but his parents don't sound as distraught. I don't know when he'll come home. I hope shortly after they patch up his pelvis. It sounds like the other injuries are healing already. Fortunately, he's pretty young, so he can heal up quickly.

Hurley is really improving. He is breathing on his own, and his internal systems are getting stronger. He's scheduled for surgery on Monday. They didn't do it on Friday because they wanted to consult with the orthopedic specialist.

Hurley had his surgery this afternoon. He will stay at the ICU tonight, and they will transport him to the ortho's hospital (an hour closer to home) tomorrow. Looks like he'll make it. He's still in rough shape. He has a TIRE TRACK on his tummy. Sad But, he's mending. Smile

Hurley went to the regular hospital today. He's been released from ICU. They do not know when he will go home, but I suspect it will be in the next week or so. His parents are going on vacation soon, and the hospital he's at now will be able to care for him. It's good to know that he is in the best hands.

Than heavens Hurley will be okay.....his peoples are to be commended for doing what was necessary to help him. I know people who would not understand spending that kind of money or putting that kind of effort into saving a furkid.

I can't begin to fathom how much money it's going to cost. He isn't home yet. Every day has to be LOTS of money. But, he is peeing on his own, which is a huge accomplishment. He still doesn't move much, but he has lots of swelling.

Peeing on his own is good. Not moving much is also good.

My friend shared a picture on FB. He's totally NAKED from the middle of his tummy to where a tail would be if he weren't a Pembroke Corgi. He has fur on his back feet, but not his legs. Poor little guy looks all embarrassed in the picture.

If you were half naked and on facebook you'd be a bit embarrassed too. Glad he's on the mend but he still has a long way to go. Resting a lot and not moving much is the best thing for him right now...all his energy is going to healing on the inside. When that swelling goes down moving around won't hurt quite so much.

I'm sure the vet will be more than willing to cut his peoples a break on the cost, AND let them make payments.

He's sleeping a lot right now. Maybe he'll be able to come home next week. I think they're trying to make sure he can move around enough to get to his food dish and out to pee before they release him from the hospital. All in good time.

He's now in physical therapy. His parents are working with the therapists so they can continue when he comes home. He decided today to take out his catheter. They said it's ok as long as he agrees to pee on his own. So far, so good!

If Hurley pulled out the catheter he must be feeling better. I'm so glad he's healing so well.

Hurley update. He's doing much, much better. He has all of his stitches, staples, and bandages removed, and his fur is finally growing back on his little butt. He goes for regular acupuncture and gets monthly checkups at the surgeon's. One of the pins in his hip moved a little, but it doesn't seem to be causing pain, so they aren't going to do anything at this point. He is still incontinent, but his bladder was totally disconnected, so they think that could be the last thing to return. He needs to build muscle strength and the ability to walk better. He is ok on flat surfaces, but he can't do stairs. Makes it hard to get out in time when every door in the house is at least 5 steps above the ground. Poor little man is wearing diapers.

Poor lil guy....diapers. I bet he's embarrassed having to wear those. When the muscle tone comes back and he's walking better his bladder should start working as it should again...I hope.

Glad to hear he's coming along well in his recovery.
