2016 solo boarding school
Envoy's first day was spent in a snow/icy rain storm. The roads were bad, so I didn't see him. Today's high temperature was 25, so I didn't ride because the quarter sheet decided to shred this summer. I forgot to order one because we were having flip flop weather. So... So far, it looks like I'm commuting 100 miles to clean stalls. Fortunately, it's supposed to warm up some later in the week.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
My friend told me not even to come today. The temps didn't make it to 30. The cleaning would have been almost impossible since paddock mess would be frozen to the ground. She did the stall for me. I need to pick up something nice for her.
I am definitely going tomorrow. It's supposed to be in the mid 30s -- a veritable heat wave! Maybe I'll even get in a short ride.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
It didn't get as warm as expected, but it was warmer. I got a short ride in. We're starting VERY slow since he's had so much time off. We walked for about 1/2 an hour and did some very slight shoulder fore (slight bending while going in a straight line). I think his bad leg is a bit tight. It should improve with time and muscling.
I forgot how much it HURTS to jump off a horse when your toes are cold. Yikes!
Just as I was getting in my car to come home, the snow started. This isn't the megastorm everyone's talking about. It was just some snow. It made the drive home a little challenging because it was covering the roads, but traction was good and traffic was light.

And pulling off you boots can be pretty painful too.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
I am fortunate that the tack room has a lovely heater in it. I can go in there and let my legs/feet warm enough to use the boot jack.
No riding today. We prepped for the big storm. Envoy is staying in the barn instead of his little paddock/stall. He helps to keep the barn warm so the water pipes don't freeze. He is enjoying being in his own stall next to a little mare. The mare isn't so thrilled, but she's out of luck until the weather improves.
I probably won't make it to see him tomorrow. I hope it improves enough by Saturday that we don't have to stay inside. I'm very glad we aren't closer to DC. We are in the "umm... we might get a lot of snow" area.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
Stayed home today. The day was all snow -- about 4 or 5 inches of it. Now, it's icy rain and incredible wind. The snow is turning icy. The hike to the barn (all 50 feet of it) is slippery.
I know Envoy spent the yucky day inside with his horse buddies. My friend did a load of work making sure they were all comfortable. I'm hoping to be able to make it out tomorrow, but the forecast is pretty miserable. I can go in the rain, but if the roads are bad, I don't want to go 55 miles each way on country roads. They are always the last to be treated.

I hope you can make. I know your friend could use the help but be safe. Barns can be very warm, those big old bodies throw off a lot of heat.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
Doesn't look hopeful. We had rain overnight, which melted quite a bit of snow. The temperatures are falling, which means ice. I'm scared of the drive more than the barn work. It will be just as messy tomorrow when things are supposed to be MUCH better.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
I'm going to make the attempt today. The sun is out, and so are the plows. I think as long as I get back before it gets too cold, ice won't be an issue.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
The roads were fine except right in front of the barn. No plows had been there yet. I was grateful for 4 wheel drive in the truck. It warmed up nicely, and the melting has begun. Mud, here we come!
I did get in a ride. It was nice. Not so cold that we were stiff, and hopping off didn't try to shatter my feet.

A beautiful day. The snow is melting, and the horses got out of their blankets. Envoy and I had a nice, if short, ride.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
We have ridden all week. It's funny how your body just remembers how to do things. i'm a little sore, but not too bad. I think Envoy is the same. Tomorrow is rest day. Tonight, he spooked at nothing and cantered off. It wasn't the prettiest canter, but it was a canter. He wasn't running like crazy, just cantering. Good boy!

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
It was SUCH a nice day. I rode in a tee shirt. Who would think on January 31? Envoy is spending the night without so much as a sheet. I bet he's caked in mud tomorrow.

Odds on. Antonio and I hung out on the back porch for a while.

Yup. Walking mud pie. We didn't wide today because I had forgotten my jacket, and it was cold and rainy. I did chores, groomed, sheeted, and came home to take care of things. Lots to do.

I'll try. Normally, the phone is lying in the car while I'm putzing around the barn.

Re: 2016 solo boarding school
Even with indoor riding, it might be a little cold to ride today. I need to remember to bring the quarter sheet (blanket that covers the horse's back end while riding), and we'll see how miserable it is. It might be ok if the wind is blocked. The south wall of the riding hall is open to let in fresh air, so it depends on which direction the howling wind is blowing. From the south, west, or east, is probably a no-go.

Personally I'd hole up the tack room with a heater. I'm a wimp

After chores, that's what I did. Way too cold for riding!
