Re: Urban Wildlife
I saw two bald eagles flying over my pasture. I wonder if I have a family in the trees back there.

Today, we walked with the herons. We've had so much rain that the ditches along the road are like creeks. We had to pass at least 5 herons. They squawked at us and flew to the trees. They are huge.

Now the female rose breasted grosbeaks are at the feeder. I saw at least 3 males in the trees yesterday. I wonder if we're getting new summer residents. This is the first year I've seen these birds. We also have a blue grosbeak and an indigo bunting. It's a colorful spring at the feeder.

We've had no sightings but plenty of 'hearings' of woodpeckers around here.
Hummies, goldfinches, and other assorted birds are flocking to our feeders. Wish I could see your colorful little friends Becky.

I will send an email. I haven't seen anyone new in a few days, but it's been soggy. The birds seem to be hanging out in the trees and making short flights for snacks.

While I was planting my artichokes, I scared a garden toad. He was trying to hop out of the raised bed and failing. So, I gave him a mound of soil to hide behind. He decided to use it as a launching pad to get out and hop away. I'm glad he's here because he will eat some of the mosquitoes that show up after the tons of rain we've had.

Re: Urban Wildlife
I saw 6 female mallards in my neighbor's yard. They swam up the full ditch on the side of the road and were grazing on the high ground. They were completely undisturbed by Bingo and me walking down the street.

The mallards are still there. Today they had a standoff with Bingo. He was standing at alert in the street, and the mallards lined up to stare at him. Bingo gave up before they did.

Bingo and I saw a GIANT turtle swimming in the ditch next to the road. It wasn't a box turtle, but didn't act like a snapper either. I wonder if it was a huge wood turtle. It was cool to see him swimming slowly down the road.

How cool. They eat all sorts of things don't they?

Re: Urban Wildlife
I'm not really sure. I know box turtles eat vegetation. I think wood turtles do too. They seem awfully laid back if they're carnivores. This one just stopped paddling and tucked in his head when Bingo stopped to stare at him. I'm glad Bingo decided that this one wasn't worth playing with. He was far too big.

Re: Urban Wildlife
I tried, but he was basically the same color as the muddy ditch water. I couldn't see him in my test pix.

Re: Urban Wildlife
Easily 18 inches from front of shell to back of shell, and then there was the head (huge) and tail. He was dinosaur sized.
Today's wildlife sighting was a 3 foot black rat snake crawling through my flower bed in front of my front porch. It is welcome to stay and eat all the mice it can. I will keep an eye on the bird nests and try to keep it away from them.

Re: Urban Wildlife
Now that is one BIG turtle!
Hope Mr(s). Snake is polite enough to leave the birds alone and only go after pesky schmice. I myself have never seen a snake.

I've only seen a tiny baby grass snake once...it was so little I don't think it could open it's mouth to swallow a fly.

Re: Urban Wildlife
Snakes are really cool. I love to watch them. We have black rat snakes, king snakes, grass snakes, and some nasties like copperheads and eastern rattlers. Since we have rat snakes and king snakes, I don't see many of the nasty ones. Supposedly, they don't like to share territory.
