Speaking of urban wildlife. I glance up from the computer yesterday to see a hawk sitting on the back porch rail.

Very cool! Our hawks have been hiding. I haven't heard or seen them recently. We do have an invasion of little toads everywhere.

It was. Today I saw a redheaded woodpecker hanging about one of the pecan trees.

Donna has something from the birdfeeder growing under it. Spindly looking plants with little yellow flowers on them. Not sure which seed it was that sprouted under there. So far the yard guys haven't mowed them down.

We have woodpeckers (a pair?) that visit the feeder with the fruit food in it. I've been having fun watching them. I actually heard one call the other day. Pretty neat voice.

We have a few smallish sunflowers growing next to the house. I am sure last year's birds planted them for us. They are about to bloom too. I can't wait. Pretty, yellow flowers that don't seem to grow more seeds.

They might have some seeds if the birds and squirrels leave it alone long enough. My mom's neighbor in the trailer park had a few sunflowers like yours, planted by the birds.....grew to about 10' high (taller than the trailer itself!) and had one huge flower on it with loads of seeds. Very funny to see one squirrel climb that flower stalk, nibble the base of the flower head until it fell off, and then try to drag off that huge sunflower seed head by himself. He couldn't. Had to go get help from another squirrel to finally carry it away.

These aren't getting that tall. As far as I can tell, they draw butterflies, but not bigger animals. That's ok though. I think butterflies count as urban wildlife.

Yes they do. I haven't seen a lot of butterflies this summer so far.

Now that I have seen, we even have caterpillars that will become butterflies.

Bingo flushed a bunny on today's walk. He sniffed in some tall grass and a bunny came hopping out. He wanted to follow it, but he wasn't acting like he would hurt it. I kept him on the leash. He was disappointed.

No bunnies today. It was a very quiet walk except for the mosquitoes. We had rain last night, and that woke the biters up. One was bugging Bingo's rear while we walked, so we did a little jogging. Ugh! I'm out of shape!

Even jogging won't keep the skeeters off you up here in IL! Nasty lil winged demons from hell are everywhere, 24/7 these days.
Saw those two bunnies again, running around having fun. No leapfrogging this time but still I'm sure they're the same two bunnies. Leaping high in the air, then running a bit, leaping way up again, going round and round the yard......so cute!
Maybe they were trying to get away from all the skeeters we have now. This is the worst I've ever seen them. No surprise since it was the rainiest June ever on record here.

Smile Welcome to our swamp life. Next strong wind will blow the biters to the next county. Of course, you'll get another county's. We get Eastern Shore huge bugs when we get storms off the ocean.

Today's wildlife sighting was a squirrel that Bingo was chasing. The little thing ran up a tree and yelled at Bingo. Bingo just stared into the tree like he couldn't believe what the squirrel just called him. I think we'll have a summer-long battle. Fortunately, Bingo doesn't seem like he's hunting to kill. He's happy just to tree the thing.

I am a bunny murderer. Crying or Very sad One ran right out in front of my car. I tried to swerve, but there was no hope.

Karma... Today an old man tried to kill Bingo and me. We were driving back from picking up the CSA veggies, and he was on the wrong side of the road. Then, it looked like he corrected, so I went on slowly. Then, he pulled BACK into my lane to turn right into his driveway. Bingo flew off the back seat. (Note to buy a doggie seat belt this weekend!) I had to slam on my breaks even though I was going slow. He looked at me while he was stopped all the way across the narrow country road as if to ask what I was doing driving on it. Ugh. I think he counts as (not) urban wildlife.

Where on earth did that guy get his driver's license? A cracker jacks box?
Glad you and Bingo weren't hurt.

I scared a chippie this morning checking Renee's house (she's on vacation). Cute lil guy. And I saw a momma duck with six little ones at our creek this morning. It's been a few years since we had ducks here, the geese usually chase them off.

We officially have a squirrel. I saw his fat little self sitting on a bird feeder. I'd be mad, but he was pretty cute up there. Bingo seems to enjoy chasing him up a tree.

I saw a black snake on alert in the yard. Its head was sticking up over the grass, and it seemed to be watching for birds. It slithered away to our storage barn when it saw me. It's welcome to stay in the barn to eat mice.

I watched two half grown baby squirrels playing in the yard. They alternated wrestling with running, jumping, and pretending to be adults during "that season". The wrestling was cute, reminded mom and I of the baby squirrel that was wrestling last summer with that stick.
