Hummies! :)
I heard one at the window. I thought I got buzzed by one yesterday, and today I'm sure I heard wings. I haven't seen one yet, but they're scouting for feeders. The syrup is cooking now. I'll hang feeders out shortly. I hope we have our usual swarm soon.

I know they were here but I didn't see any this year.

The feeder is out, and of course I haven't seen a single one. They are flying through at this point I think. The residents should be here in a week or two.

It's good to have them back. They look a bit hungry. I guess they're stocking up while they build nests. The crepe myrtle better get on the stick and start growing leaves. It has buds, but the leaves are being slow.

The battles have begun. It looks like we have a pretty good swarm this year. I hope we get a lot of babies.

I think hatching might be underway. The dads are at the feeder a lot during the day. I haven't seen the moms except in mornings and evenings. I think they might be sitting on eggs or protecting little ones. It seems early for hatchlings, so maybe eggs...

I think it's egg sitting time too....our hummies are going the same thing. Males mostly all day long, but females at dawn and dusk.

Re: Hummies! :)
We got a new feeder because some of the birds were trying to drink from the red topped seed feeder.

I think the birds are more active now. We are going through syrup much faster. I made up a new batch today, and made it concentrated so it will last longer. I just mix with plain water when I fill the feeders.

We are starting to get babies too. They are coming in the early morning and late evening now that it's so hot.

Same here. It's amazing how fast they can fly, and they are now hovering for a moment staring at us through the window.

The swarms are here! There were probably 20 zooming around one feeder today. I think the babies are all out and getting ready to fly for the winter. Hard to believe they will start leaving in about a month. I will miss them.

So will I....our babies were flying around each other and zooming around like they were playing, then stopped for a long drink, then started playing again.
Any chance of getting a video of this years swarms at your feeders Becky? Pretty please?

I can try, but no promises. This crew is way more concerned about me being around than in previous years.

The birds are drinking a lot. I guess they're ramping up for migration. I expect they'll start leaving in a few weeks. I'll miss them. I will leave the feeders out through October for the birds who pass through.

Ours are draining the feeders dry too. We see the babies a lot at Brads' feeder, zooming around playing, then a drink, zoom around some more, practicing for the big fly across the gulf.
I'll miss them when they leave too. I know Bij will, he's fascinated by how they fly.

One of the babies here was trying to drink from the hay string I used to hang the feeder from. The string is orange and starting to fray at the ends. It must look like a flower to a hummie.
