home again home again
In a way I envy you. It's bone dry here and going outside is like entering the foyer of hades.

I wish we could send you 1/2 our rain. We're far too wet, but I don't want to be dry either. I am seriously wondering what this weather is doing to the hay crop this year.

It doesn't bear thinking about it. I just cringe when I hear hay prices.

Yeah... It's going to be a lean winter, I think. Better start socking away some extra money or I'll be in trouble when it comes time to write the check.
Ponies are out in the soggy pasture. Most of the ponds have receded. The back pasture is really flooded. I guess that will go down with the drier weather predicted this week. The mosquitoes, however, are crazy. Good thing their fly spray works for those - at least for a while. I need to order more if I'm going to keep using it at this rate.

I have a pretty intensive fly prevention program. I use beneficial wasps that eat the larvae, and feed-through supplement that has diatomaceous earth, which is supposed to discourage fly breeding. I've seen some deer flies and a few bigger horse flies (not the helicopter sized ones), but not too many yet. They usually get vicious in the hotter months.

I don't know what kind we have here but they're vicious.

Re: home again home again
Lu and I went on a very short walk today. The roads were pleasant with the sun and breeze. When we got to the woodsy road, the mosquitoes were terrible. Lu went a little way down the road and looked at me to ask if we could go home. Good boy. Yes, we can. He got lots of cookies and some time under his fan. The horses will be going into a new pasture today, so they're resting up for marathon munching later.

Today was Envoy's day to go down the road. He isn't as bold as Ruby or Lu, but he was very brave. He didn't fuss much until we got to where the mosquitoes were really bad. Then I wimped out and we came home. We just did some walking around and then went into the barn so the fans could keep the dusk bugs away. Looks like summer is coming back for the weekend.

So far we've been lucky in the bug department.

Re: home again home again
Whew! Ruby and I rode out today. Some parts of the ride were fine, but where the bugs are bad, they are BAD. Since she's gray, I could see every time I smashed one of the icky mosquitoes. She was a terrific girl as usual. She didn't complain at all. Just shook her head to get them away from her ears.
She was pretty unhappy late in the evening when the deer flies came out. She and Envoy ran around like maniacs. Lu spent his time rolling. I had to bring them in before the storms, but I felt bad not bringing them in earlier.

Re: home again home again
Crazy storm blew in tonight. I had just brought in the newly washed blankets, and the lightening went crazy. Thunder was booming. Envoy ran to the gate to come in. Ruby was running and pushing Lu ahead of her. It took about 5 minutes to get her attention, but when she realized that I wanted to bring her in, she stood still but very alert. She walked in like a good girl, and Lu came in gratefully. We got inside just as the downpours started. It's still rumbling out there, but the lightening calmed down. It looks like stalls will be a wreck tomorrow.

Re: home again home again
The boys were obviously happy to be in. Their stalls were pretty neat. Poor Ruby had a rough night. She kicked everything everywhere. Her stall leaks after the roof issues, which I got an estimate on today. Looks like a good, new roof with new rafters is on the way. Then, further barn improvements after we get a sturdy outside. I bet Ruby will be happier when her stall doesn't have a waterfall in the corner.

I can imagine. That's wonderful news about the roof. Will it take long?

We can't start until September because the contractor has another job. But, he's that good. I'll wait. Once we start, the roof shouldn't take long. My husband and I will repair the side wall ourselves (easy to nail up some T1-11). Then, the rest of the improvements can go bit by bit.

Re: home again home again
It's pretty sad when you have to put on fly sheets for the night time mosquitoes. Ruby's new one has a really big belly strap, so she and Envoy need to trade. His is pretty small. I just hope they keep them on all night. I don't want to go on a hunt in the morning.
Tomorrow's dentist day. My usual dentist can't make it this year, so I'm using the backup one. I will schedule a 6 month checkup with my favorite guy, and we can do yearly visits when he isn't so busy. I hope that having his teeth done will help Lu gain some weight.

I agree, about the teeth. I would worm and do teeth, that usually took care of the problem.
I hope you don't have to hunt either.

Re: home again home again
I wormed last week. Poor Lu though! Apparently, his previous dental care was less than good. He had a bad tooth in the back that was impacted, and sheared off. That one had to come out. It was a difficult procedure. He had a lot of soft tissue damage from his bad teeth, and probably some infection from all the bad things. So, he has a big load of powdered antibiotics, some bute for pain, and some Ulcerguard for his poor tummy. We hope that getting his teeth in shape and keeping his stomach happy will help him gain some weight.
He has a followup appointment in 6 weeks. There's a little bit of the bad tooth that wouldn't come out. The dentist and vet want to see if it loosens up with time.

I hope so too. Poor pony, anyway a good mash will help set things to right.

Re: home again home again
He is quite perky this morning. He ate his hay pellet mash seasoned with bute, and went straight to grazing. I think the meds are helping, and am sure he will start to put on weight now that he can actually chew his food. He ate most of his hay in the stall last night, so that will help too. He's still taking small bites and chewing slowly. I think he's learning how his mouth is SUPPOSED to work. It's so good to see him happy and his eyes bright.

I know it's too early to show much progress, but I swear the top of his bum is looking a little rounder. He's eating like he'd been starved - and he had. I am enjoying seeing him eat and have fun. New Lu!
