Fence is done! We finished right as the rain rolled in. So happy to have that done. I didn't get to ride because the rain came, but that's ok. I can ride tomorrow without the chore hanging over my head.

Very nice ride today. It actually wasn't TOO hot. Amazing for August. I'll take it!

Re: home again home again
Rest day for Envoy today. The weather is really nice for August. Mid 80s with tolerable humidity. We'll definitely ride tomorrow. No need to waste the good weather. It's supposed to get HOT again this weekend. I'll be in Northern VA visiting a friend and watching polo. As long as we don't melt, it sounds like a fun time.

Re: home again home again
The weather was amazing today. It was in the mid 80s with reasonable humidity. Of course that meant I had to ride. It was great not to have lots of flies and sweat.
The dentist cancelled tomorrow's appointment since the other people on her schedule this way cancelled with her. She comes from about 90 miles away, so I understand not making the trip for only one farm. But, she can't reschedule until September. I'm thinking I will contact my vet and use the dentist I don't really like. Professionally, she's fine. I just don't like her much on a personal level. She's kind of obnoxious.

Re: home again home again
Today was dentist day. Envoy and Kina were fine. Kina has a loose tooth because of her age. It isn't ready to come out, but it might on its own before next year's appointment. The dentist recommends that I get a different bit for Envoy, which is possible. My vet (who was there to sedate) said I could borrow one of hers to see if he likes it.
My friend's mare, on the other hand, is a mess. She is missing one tooth and has an abnormal tooth on the other side. The vet says she needs an x-ray to see what should be done. Since my friend wasn't here to say ok, I said we should just do her teeth the normal way and I would ask my friend to call them. If she wants to set up an appointment, I can do it. The horse will be checked in 6 months to see if the pain in her mouth has gotten better anyway, so my friend might wait until then to do the x-rays.

Re: home again home again
I forgot to share the biggest (and not happiest) news from yesterday's appointment. I've suspected for a while that Kina might be developing Cushing's disease. She never shed enough in my opinion. The vet agrees. She will start Pergolide as soon as the order comes in. The vet hopes that we've caught it early enough that the hormone support will keep symptoms under control. She (the vet) said that she's known a lot of horses who shed their thick coats and look fantastic. Kina's coat isn't too thick, it just isn't summer thin. Fingers crossed!

Re: home again home again
Took a short, easy ride this morning. It was 84 degrees at 9 AM, so I didn't think a hard workout was in order. We did some trot intervals and bending work. Then, we cooled out with a wander down the road.
The horses will be coming in a bit later. I'm trying to leave them out as long as possible because there's a breeze. Even with fans in the barn, the air outside is nicer.

Sorry to hear abut Kina and your friends mare. Hopefully they caught Kina in time and treatment will help. I hope your friend can make the dental appointment sooner than later.

Re: home again home again
The good news for Kina is that she has no other symptoms than her thick coat. No foot problems, and no strange cycles. So, we think everything will be good once she gets her meds. My friend is going to help body clip her in a couple weeks. She's a pro braider, and she clips the big show ponies in the winter. So, she has 2 big clippers and tons of blades.
My other friend's mare is having lots of problems. She might not need her teeth done because she is refusing to walk. She got laminitis this past winter, and has not improved this summer. I think she probably has officially foundered because she is refusing to get up or leave her stall. Very sad.

Re: home again home again
Bad BAD ponies! I was giving showers today, and I let Kina and Envoy munch grass while I hosed my friend's horse. I put her in her stall only to see my 2 running down the street like they knew where they were going. I grabbed halters and the jar of treats. The new neighbors (bought a tiny property with a cute little store on it to use as a weekend house) came out to see if they could help. I shook the treats and the horses came running home. I wasn't afraid they'd take off. Kina is too lame to go far, and Envoy knows where his supper is. But, how embarrassing. Silly ponies!

Well you know maybe they did. Look at this way at least you weren't hung over, in your jamies and unlaced paddock boots.

Re: home again home again
Too hot to do anything today. The horses were in by noon, and didn't even try to take a step while I gave them showers. They each drank 10 gallons of water in their stalls. I filled their outside tank with fresh water since it's supposed to be pretty warm all night. I think I'll be glad to get back to normal summer weather. I have a new bit on trial for Envoy, and need to ride at least a few times in the next two weeks.

Re: home again home again
Tried to ride today, but the flies are amazing. We got about 10 minutes of jigging and bucking in before I gave up. I couldn't blame him. They really were terrible and were biting me too.

Re: home again home again
Bought hay today. Not too expensive since it's summer and there's grass. No reason to blow the budget on bales that will just make them fat. That will be winter hay. Stacking in the summer is HOT work.

What a way to meet the new neighbors.
How's your friends pony doing? Just wondering.
I hope too that you caught Kina's condition in time.....have the meds arrived yet?

Re: home again home again
Meds are here and she's doing well already. I have hopes for her.
My friend's horse is doing fine. She is probably going to her new permanent home this weekend if it's not too hot. We want to get her settled in at my friend's aunt's place while there is still grass and she can get used to everything without having to fight for her place in the herd and access to hay.

Re: home again home again
I tried something new today. I rode in the morning. Since I work at home, I figured I could take an early lunch after my boring morning meetings and ride. The flies weren't as bad. This might be a thing, although I will need to work in time for a Bingo walk too. I can't take him in the afternoon if it's hot because the road would burn his poor paws.
