Aurora Borealis Empty Aurora Borealis

Post by lovekitties Wed Aug 04, 2010 5:31 pm

Has anyone seen the Aurora Borealis? I just heard about it this morning so didn't get a chance to look last night, but It's supposed to be on again tonight. Unfortunately it's very cloudy and hazy which may mean it will not be showing well. It's supposed to be visable in the North east states in the northern skies, brought on by the solar flare the other day.

I actually saw one in the 1970s but at that time I was living in an area where there was not much light dispersent . Even though technically i lived in the Bronx in NYC my window s overlooked the Hutchinson river with a park/bird sanctuary on the other side and the long island sound

Anyway the one I saw was gorgeous. I wish i had taken pictures at the time

i need to go out and see if i can see anything between the trees. is it all night or just for part of the time? hmmmm....can't hurt to go up and look.
I THOUGHT i'd seen it as a kid but thought i had dreamed it! it came around when i was living in MI out in the country so there was no problem with too much light! i thought we might have been able to see it up there because we were so close to Canada!
eta...went out and looked but i think its too cloudy to see anything. just a few stars. there's a light coming from the other side of the garage (coming from the other side of town or the next town over)but i think that's town lights and not sky lights.

I hope you northerners can catch a glimpse. Seeing the aurora is one of the things on my "bucket list."

I caught a faint Aurora display one time just after I moved into my current home, which is almost 10 years ago now, and it was really neat. I'm going to try to catch it tonight, if I can stay up that late!

Yes, they do have cruises up the Canadian coast, and of course in Alaska, where the Auroras are often seen, but you are so right, JB. I've never been on a cold weather cruise. I get enough of that here in Chicagoland, pretty as it may be. I also did not stay up to try to see the lights last night. I heard that the better nights would have been the two nights prior, which were cloudy, so I went to bed.

Just a little aside, my home town is named Aurora, because it was one of the first towns to utilize electric street lights. It's also featured in the skit and movie Wayne's World. I always thought that someone from SNL must have been invited down to my folks' basement when my younger brother was in high school, because they certainly could have drawn inspriation from my brother and his friends.

I caught sight of the aurora twice but that was over 20 years ago. Not very bright but it was distinctly the aurora.

If I remember I'll have to take a look at the sky tonight, but not much hope since there's a ton of light pollution here too.
