Wow! Shows they have compassion for others too, humans don't have the corner on the market for that.

Re: Orangutan Saves Baby Bird
Well, the orang was intensely curious. He knew the chick was a live thing, and he wanted to know more. Whether he thought he was "saving" it is debatable (as is whether he actually saved it or not), but he certainly showed gentle intuition in how it could be coaxed to the edge of the pond. His actions, to me, liken him more to a curious and careful scientist than an animal rescuer. He wanted it to continue to exist, yes, but mostly so he could examine it and figure out what sort of creature it was.
Sorry, that's my take. I don't mean to put a damper on anyone's heartfelt connection with our orange cousins. We are VERY much alike! I just don't think it's respectful to anthropomorphise other animals beyond what they themselves mean by their actions.
And, of course, I have no idea what Jorong was thinking.

Re: Orangutan Saves Baby Bird
suzzz i get your point....i would like to see more after it happened....cuz the way he was picking it up and examining it you couldn't tell if it was alive or dead after a while. and the article seems to skirt around the issue or what happened to the bird in the end. (otherwise they would have said that they released it somewhere or its in the care of some bird people etc).
it is interesting that he saved it from drowning but maybe he just didn't know just what it was nor how to handle it. after all it was a different species altogether.
i'd like to believe that the bird was saved and lived and someone was able to get in there and take the bird to where it belonged though!
(and i have to admit i HAD to turn the sound off on it cuz those kids and their comments were making me kinda sick!)

After many years of experiments with sign language and symbol language on a large computer keyboard, researchers have shown chimps, gorillas, and orangutans to have the intelligence of 4-7 year old children and that they do have emotions and think much like we do. They will even lie to stay out of trouble! I know the orang here was curious, but also think it knew that bird was in trouble and needed help.

oh it obviously took the bird out of the water....what i'm wondering is if the bird survived or if it was even still alive when it got to the grass. the poor thing looked dead to me.
