abandoned kitten
When Kevin picked me up after school yesterday, he told me that someone had left a cat in one of our cat carriers we keep on our front porch. He thought that maybe one of our volunteers left it for me to vaccinate or photograph. Well, that was not the case at all. Someone sneaked onto our porch and abandoned a sick, 3 month old kitten in that carrier. I got his goopy eyes cleaned up, and set him up in a large wire crate w/ food, water, bed and litterbox. He didn't eat anything, so after I fed the little kittens, I gave him 10 cc's of formula with Nutrical in it. A little while later, he did eat some Kitten Chow. He's eating well and drinking lots of water, and using the litterbox ok, but mainly he's sleeping. He's very thin, he's scared, and he has a bad eye infection that has been ongoing for some time (the fur under his left eye is gone because of all the eye discharge that's been running down his face). He lets me handle him, and when I gave him his second treatment with eye ointment, he purred up a storm. He's in rough shape right now, so I don't want to do photos yet. I really don't need more kittens right now, but he's safe and warm and his tummy is full. (The carriers will be moved into the garage as soon as the rain stops today. Sheesh.)

Re: abandoned kitten
That poor kit! He obviously now knows you are helping him, so he purrs for you. Bless you for taking him in. From what you described he's lucky to be alive IMHO. I'd take a pic now, for before & after comparison. I hope he doesn't lose sight in that infected eye and that he heals quickly both physically and emotionally after his rough start in life. What color is he? Long hair or short? Can you hold him at all? I'd be tempted to hold him close, whisper sweet things in his ear, and rock him a bit like I do Bijoux.
Hisses for the people who let him suffer, then dumped him. Good thing those carriers were on the porch, I hate to think where they'd have dumped him otherwise......

Fiff, he his a DSH, white and grey. He seems to like being held, but I don't like to wake him up from his long naps. His eyes seem much better, and they are not goopy this morning. I took a pic for this page, and when I get it posted, I'll email it to you as well.

WOW...! That's a lot of fur missing from around his eyes! Poor li'l feller...
Any ideas who left him? Must be someone who knows you keep your own carriers on your porch...

Re: abandoned kitten
I have no idea who left him. It could be someone who has been here before, or someone who was going to dump the kitten anyway just saw the carrier and used it. This is a small town, and I teach at the only high school, so pretty much everyone knows where to find me.
I have a little teal fuzzy blanket that I meant to give him, but I grabbed a blankie without turning on the light, and it turned out to be a pink one. He doesn't care, though. He buries his head in the soft blankie anyway. He's secure in his masculinity, I suppose.

Re: abandoned kitten
My guess is that someone found or knew of him and brought him to you because of your reputation for taking in, well, cats like this. I don't think the people who neglected him to this point would bother. But you never know about someone else's desperation; maybe they did the best they could by bringing him to you.
In any case, no matter! He's with you now, and is obviously responding well. I'm so glad! Poor little darling! By all means, let him sleep as much as he needs to; he's healing, and sleep is a wonderful restorative.

That's an astute observation Suzzz. Poor guy he does look rough in the photo
but he's also alert.

Re: abandoned kitten
Thanks for emailing me the pic. He really was in rough shape. I'm glad to hear he's recovering so fast! A lil TLC will do wonders. I'd happily volunteer to hold him as much as he likes....if only I lived near enough to you. (Bij has been ignoring me again) Heck, I'd hold him as he fell asleep and continue holding him until he woke up. Imagine the purrs when he opened his eyes after a nice nap and found himself in loving arms.......
The fur will grow back and he's going to be a very handsome lil boy.

For the meantime, kitty peace of mind might be trumping masculinity at this point anyway!

Re: abandoned kitten
I think his ears appear to be large because he's so thin, and because he's the age he is. When he grows a little and puts on a couple of pounds, the ears will probably look more "normal." This morning he's eating well and playing with toys in between naps. Of course, he's a real huggie bear too.

He looks great. The eyes are still a bit messy and the hair still has a way to
go but he looks great. Tell you what G if I'm ever in that shape I want you taking
care of me.

Re: abandoned kitten
I dunno, gbste, if Benny grows into those ears he's gonna be a big'un. I think they're fabulous! I refuse to countenance the idea that he could be so tiny and frail that those ears are... OMG, is he really that tiny and frail?? Geez, he breaks my heart. I really don't know how you do it, caring for these tragic little ones. I really don't.

If Benny grows to be a big boy, that just means there's more of him to love and hug! He really is improving with every pic I manage to see. What color are his eyes?

Re: abandoned kitten
Benny saw the vet today, and she says he's doing just fine, considering. She says we're doing everything right--good to know.
His eyes are gold, and less "squinty" each day.
