RABID RACCOON IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD
I just heard that there was a raccoon a little less than a mile from where I live who died and was tested positive for rabies. It had attacked at least one litter of feral cats and kittens and animal control is not trying to identify the cats. there are a lot of ferals in my neighborhood. very scary

Oh yikes! I hope there are no rabid kitties coming soon. Sigh... That's just awful.

That is terrible. Be careful. I'm sure the colony caretakers are on the alert.

Re: RABID RACCOON IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD
I haven't heard anything on the news or in the papers yet. only on a neighborhood blog I read every day. I've got to tell one of my co-workers this morning. She lives even closer to the area they caught the raccoon. I haven't seen any raccoons around where I live but there are possums, and lots of feral cats

The possums are carriers and hopefully the caretakers of the colonies are retrapping to vaccinate.

I sure hope all the feral kitties were vaccinated already.....rabies is a horrible death. I wonder how the raccoon got it? A rabid bat maybe?

I know possums can be carriers so we are all being careful. Animal care and control is checking on feral colonies they know about or getting in touch with feral caretakers.
I saw that it did hit the news last night and was on the radio. Also, posters are going up around the area

If you know people who feed the feral colonies, let them know it's a good idea to bring in food at night. Cat food is a big lure for raccoons and opossums. We had to stop feeding Gateway and GK outside because we had those wild little nasties visiting the cat bowls.

We have resident coyotes now. The neighbors have started shooting them on sight. I'd say I am upset, but they have devastated the feral cat colony on the corner. I miss the little kitties.

I can imagine you do....I see very few stray kitties now that we have coyotes all over the place. Very few bunnies, possums, or raccoons too.

Re: RABID RACCOON IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD
So far, the bunnies, raccoons, and opossums seem to be fine. The deer are also still around in force. But, it is worrisome to have those nasty things in the field right down the street. Since we have rabid raccoons, I know we'll end up with rabid coyotes. I have to say that I'm grateful to my hunter neighbors for keeping us as far from the icky things as possible.
I'd feel different if I had moved into THEIR territory. I don't like it when people here shoot bears. We live in what has always been their land. I think it's better just to make sure to keep things as uninviting to them as possible and let them live in the woods around us. But, coyotes are an invasive species almost as bad as kudzu.

Re: RABID RACCOON IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD
My husband took a picture of one in downtown Chicago. I wonder what predator would keep them under control. Wolves? I don't think we'd want them wandering around big cities either. I don't know if I'd mind a few out here in the country though.
