Poor Henry! Empty Poor Henry!

Post by gbste Thu Feb 03, 2011 6:02 pm

My elderly yellow lab cross, Henry, has been having teary eyes for a couple of weeks. It didn't seem serious. I would wipe off his face in the morning, and he'd be fine for a day or so. This morning, it looked like he was shedding bloody tears from his left eye! Kevin took him to the vet after lunch, so I hope everything is ok with him. He has some small growths on his eyelid, and perhaps one of those got opened up somehow.

Last night, he had trouble settling down to sleep. I thought that he was cold, and we opened up one of the fleece blankets we had picked up on sale and covered him with it. He settled down to sleep then, but I'm wondering if his poor eye was bothering him last night.

Poor thing. I was told at one time that those dark tears, and teary eyes in general, are sometimes caused by a PH imbalance. Lots of people on the Papillon board I belong to will sprinkle a tiny bit of buttermilk powder on the dogs' dry food and claim that helps, but if it's only one eye, maybe it is an injury or something. Hope he gets better soon.

It turns out that Henry has an abrasion on his third eyelid. We got some eye drops for him that have a medicine for the abrasion plus a pain killer. The drops work really well, and they are easy to administer since Henry recognizes that they make him feel better. He keeps his head still and actually wags his tail when we administer the drops. He's a big boy, so it's good that he wants to cooperate. Kevin says it took 3 people to actually do the eye exam at the vet's, but once he got his meds, he was a happy boy once again.

I am so glad Henry is improving already. Very smart dog to have figured out those drops are what is making his eye feel so much better. How long do you have to put those drops in? When does Henry go back for a recheck?

Henry needs drops 4 times a day for a week. He doesn't need a recheck if the drops are working.

That's good to hear. Will he have the drops for the
rest of his life. Glad he is such a good boy. I'm sure he
he gets a treat or two for being such a good boy.

He only needs the drops until the abrasion heals. He's much better already, and much happier. He was in pain before the treatment, but he's obviously feeling more comfortable now.

Well, we do have a house full of cats...or else, Henry could have run into something face first or else slipped and landed face first while he was outside. His balance isn't what it used to be.

could sokmething have gotten into his eye and caused the abrasion? thankfully i've never had a critter with that problem, but i remember reading in a James Herriot book about a dog that had really bad eyes because his eyelashes were growing so they hit his eyes.
I"m just happy it was something simple and that he's being so good with the eye drops:)

I'm glad it was something pretty simple and easy to treat. Good boy, Henry!

I got a scratch on my eye this past winter from just a piece of hair. I have no idea how it happened, but OUCH! Fortunately, eyes heal quickly.

Here's to hoping they heal without scarring, and that it never happens again.
