Tiny puppy Empty Tiny puppy

Post by gbste Wed Oct 12, 2011 11:46 am

Yesterday evening just as we were finishing up feeding all the cats and dogs their dinners, I got a call from the woman who runs the rescue I volunteer for. She had just found out that the dog pound had a very small puppy, she thought maybe only 4 weeks old. The pound had officially been closed for 10 minutes, but I called over there, and the ACO let me come in and pick up the puppy since they're not supposed to keep pups under 8 weeks old out there. I took the little guy home, and our rescue will keep him for his 5 day hold. He's probably a rat terrier (as near as I can tell. I'm not up on the small breeds.) He weighs about 3 pounds, is most likely 5-6 weeks old, and he's white with a few very cute black spots, and black ears. He was wearing a flea collar, which I removed immediately since he is much too young to be exposed to those toxic things. I put him in my outdoor kennel, and left him there for about 15 minutes while I went to pick up som vaccine for him. When I got back home, he had managed to squeeze his head and his entire right front leg through the chain link. We kept him crated (he slept in a cat carrier, which was almost too big for him!) and took him out for supervised yard visits last night and this morning. I'm hoping that another volunteer can foster him, as it will be very difficult for us to keep him safe outdoors, and my own dogs don't like puppies much. A bigger breed (like Artie) can hold his own, but they could harm this little guy without meaning to. (And they might mean to. My own dogs are elderly and cranky.)

Awwww............who would abandon a lil guy like this one? And so young too? I know a bit about the smaller dogs, if I had a pic I might be able to tell you if he really is a rat terrier or not.

A lil pup like that would steal my heart, I just love the littler pups.

he sounds like he's not much bigger than an actual rat! poor little pooch...but at least he's young enough that somebody should scoop him up before to longer (after he's finally able to get out there; ) ).

Here's a pic of the mini mutt. I can't seem to think of a name that fits him yet.

Poor guy, glad they said come on down even though they were closed.
Sounds like there are some good people there.

Just saw the snap, he is adorable. How about calling him Mini Mutt.

Did they take your pic down? I get a big blank space, and I have no filters. He'll be back tomorrow I'm sure. He sounds like he's TOO cute. Thanks for keeping him safe.

Hmmm...I'm seeing the picture, so maybe the blank space was a temporary problem

Mini Mutt is cute, but kinda sounds like a girl's name.

I agree that he looks like Earl, but our wonderful dsh cat, Earl Grey, just passed away last month. (They often called him Speedo but his real name was Mr. Earl.) We would probably be a little sad using that name all the time. I was trying to remember if Earl has an alter ego. Mooch has several, but I can't think of any for Earl.

He sure does look like a rat terrier pup. I looked at a lot of pics of puppies online and he looks like about half of them. How anyone could abandon a lil guy like him..........they have no heart at all. Who could resist that cute lil face?

Since he'll be a little dog, how about a turnabout in name? Call him Maximus Dogis (the romans might've called him that for his bigger than life personality).

I seem to remember there was a Mutts bit about Speedo and Mr. Earl, but it referred to Earl's pet snail. Great reference, but in this case, too sad for you to use, gbste. I'm truly sorry about your Earl Grey.

Littlebit will get his own name soon since surely someone will quickly adopt such a darling! Who's got him now? Any foster takers yet?

JRTs and rat terriers look a lot alike to me, but don't tell that to afficionados of either of those breeds.

The little guy turned out to be about a week older than I thought. We named him Charlie, and he was quickly snapped up at the adoption fair on Saturday. He has a stay at home mom and his own 10 year old boy to take care of him.
