I've been re-reading some Sentinel/Stargate SG1 fanzines
I just started reading Sacred Evil by Heather Graham. It's a supernatural mystery where the police detective is investigating a series of jack the Ripper type murders in modern day Lower Manhattan/Five Points. The first murder just took place a few blocks from where I work

I never did watch it. Almost a month ago, I started to reread Storm of Dragons by George R.R. Martin. I'm at least 3/4 way through.

I meant Storm of Swords not Storm of Dragons. I'm still out of it mentally with loss of Pugsley. It's part of the Fire and Ice series, at least that's what the series is being referred as.

I got the audio book Queen Isabella (scholarly but accessible work about a 14th century English queen involved in politics, treachery and possibly murder) from the library to listen to in the car. I've gotten so hooked I'm going to forgo a real book this weekend and listen to the rest. I have about 11 discs left of the 18. It's gripping!

Who wrote it. If it's the queen I'm thinking of, she was known as the She Wolf of France.
Reading another Pizza shop murder mystery.

Alison Weir.

Isabella was known as the She Wolf of France. Weir makes a case for a much richer interpretation of her actions.

If you're at all interested in this sort of thing, I'd suggest starting with Weir's Innocent Traitor, a "fictionalized" account of the life of Lady Jane Grey. It must be called "fictionalized" because who knows what was actually said at one time or another way back then, but Weir's research and reconstruction of events is flawless. That's the one that got me hooked.

My Thrift Shop is having a book sale. Gotta love that! My gym pal has a beach week coming up and I got her some fun paperback mysteries and a mint hardback of one of my favorite books, Step Ball Change, all for $2.50. Going back to shop for myself tomorrow! Very Happy

Read a fascinating memoir this weekend of a woman, she must be 42 or 43 now, who was raised by crazy hardscrabble English parents in Africa. Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood

From Publisher's Weekly via Amazon:
tender, intensely moving and even delightful journey through a white African girl's childhood. Born in England and now living in Wyoming, Fuller was conceived and bred on African soil during the Rhodesian civil war (1971-1979), a world where children over five "learn[ed] how to load an FN rifle magazine, strip and clean all the guns in the house, and ultimately, shoot-to-kill." With a unique and subtle sensitivity to racial issues, Fuller describes her parents' racism and the wartime relationships between blacks and whites through a child's watchful eyes. Curfews and war, mosquitoes, land mines, ambushes and "an abundance of leopards" are the stuff of this childhood.

Fuller's remarkable affection for her parents (who are racists) and her homeland (brutal under white and black rule) shines through. This affection, in spite of its subjects' prominent flaws, reveals their humanity and allows the reader direct entry into her world.

I wouldn't have lasted 2 seconds in her world. Not 2 seconds. A remarkable book.

Suze, you remind me of a story from a subcontractor I worked with. She's an Iranian woman who snuck out of the country in the dead of night all by herself at the tender age of 15 or 16 in constant fear of being caught and raped or killed. I'll always remember sitting in a group having lunch with her, and people were complaining about their lives when they were 15-16 - you know the kind of troubles kids of that age have. And then you hear her stories, and they'll curl your hair. We really do have 1st world problems here, and sometimes we need to see a real human who has real problems to appreciate our world again.
