Saints days..... Empty Saints days.....

Post by Sue Short Wed Oct 03, 2012 11:59 pm

Okay, I didn't know where else to put this. Also I want to make it somewhat fun.

Tomorrow is the feast day of St, Francis of Assisi. We came to know as the patron saint of animals
though he has now become associated with the enviorment. I looked him up and the serenity prayer that
we are all familiar with is written in the 20th century. His prayer starts out Lord make an instrument of thy
peace. Well worth looking up.

Enjoy, post your favorite saint or even look one up and post it here.

The first saint that came to mind was St. Patrick and his feast day is March 17. I found some information about him and included a link.

He's perhaps the most famous. He also shares he feast day with St. Gertrude. She
is the patroness of those who tend to cats and gardens.

I don't know much about saints, but I do love that so many churches (Catholic and non-Catholic alike) take the opportunity of St. Francis' feast day to honor our relationship with our companions with blessings and prayers. Several special services will be held in my area this weekend. I think Francis and Gertrude would be pleased.

St. Colman of Stockerau is patron for hanged men, horned cattle, and horses. Also was invoked against plague and for husbands by marriageable girls; invoked against hanging; invoked against gout. His feast day is October 13. I know Sue has mentioned Bast.

Bast is an Egyptian goddess and cats were scared to her. I'm liberal about these
things.

Bast obviously had great taste. She loved cats, and anyone who does has great taste in companions.

St. James the Greater feast day is July 25. One website said that he may have been Jesus's cousin. The list mentioned that he is patron for arthritis sufferers, furriers, equestrians, horsemen, druggists amongst other medical conditions, groups of people and places.

Today is the feast day of St. Crispin, he is the patron saint of shoemakers, cobblers and leather
workers. It is also the 597th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt. If you get the chance go to
You Tube and look up the St. Crispin's Day speech given by Henry V. Go for the Kenneth Branagh version.

Almost missed it but today is St. Nicholas day. This was originally the main gift
giving day in order not to detract from the religious signigicant if Christmas day. New
Years day was also the day for giving of gifts. Along with the Feast of Ephinay.

If I remember right, March 15 is Ides of March. St Raphael is the patron saint of travelers and his feast day is Sept 29.

Weez wanted to know when is St. Weezer's day.  I told her there IS no St. Weezer, for obvious reasons.  But (I continued), just as every day is Mother's Day, every day is also Kitty Day.  Rolling Eyes  That calmed her down.  She flopped down and took a nap which, I gather, is the traditional way to celebrate Kitty Day.

Today is the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas. At one point this was the traditional gift giving day
instead of Christmas Day. Gifts were exchanged on this day so it wouldn't detract from the
importance of Christmas Day. Bob posted an interesting article about the Krampus on FB. I will look it up and post the link if I can.

Here's a link to Theodore Guerin. There is a high school in Indiana that bears her name and I didn't see the high school mentioned on the page.

Today is the Feast of St Stephen, he was one the church's first martyr's. According to Wikipedia, his martyrdom was witnessed by Saul of Tarsus aka Paul of Tarsus(St Paul). Stephen is from the Greek Stephanos meaning crown. It's the second day of Christmas.
