That they are. Unfortunately, a couple got attacked by birds while they were on the fence drying. They have to go back to the laundry. EEW!

Cree is being a butthead. He attacked Envoy. Fortunately, Envoy is quick and smart, but I do not like that Cree is so mean. I asked the vet if she knew a better home for him, but she says that it's really hard to place a mean horse. If he continues, I really need to think about putting him down. I don't want anyone to get hurt because he's not behaving.

Oh Cree, don't mess up a good thing here.....be nice!

Becky, I don't envy you having to make that decision.

Better today. He's still being grouchy to Envoy, but there was no chasing and biting. I worry that he will never be trustworthy. I hate this.

He is fairly new to me. He seems fine with only one other horse, and probably would be fine in a herd of geldings. With Kina in the herd, he keeps her away from Envoy and treats Envoy very badly. Fortunately, Envoy is smart and willing to be at the bottom of the pecking order. The thing that really worries me is that Cree charged me when I was leading Envoy in to ride. That is unsafe, and if I ever have to have someone watch my horses, they could get hurt. It would be easy to find him a home if he were rideable. He is fearless. But, since he is lame, no one wants him.

I've started to look for a new home for him. He is a good horse with just one other horse in the pasture, and a pleasure to handle for farrier, vet, dentist. He should find a home where he can be someone's loved pet. He just does not get along with my herd. I have some hope... Wish us luck.

Things are quiet this weekend. We moved the horses to the big pasture, so there's more room for Envoy to stay away and still get good grass. There was one confrontation in the paddock, and Envoy almost had to jump the water tub. But, he got away, and Kina intervened. She planted both of her hind feet in Cree's chest and squealed as if to say, "Leave my friend alone or I'll beat the boogers out of you." Cree backed off. Good Kina!

Quieter today. All were standing in the paddock waiting for dinner. I keep a small hope that it will all sort itself out, but I am still watching closely.

Good girl Kina! I'm hoping things will sort themselves out too without too many more battles. Kina as herd leader (after you) will help immensely with that. Meanwhile, keep looking for another home for Cree where he'll be an only boy.

I think if Envoy agrees to stay at a reasonable distance, things will be fine. They seem to be alright now. We'll see how things go when Kina goes into season again.

That's when things will get interesting I'm sure....nothing like hormones in the air to stir things up....and maybe not for the better.

Wanted to ride tonight, but it's thundering. Cooler weather is on the way, so tomorrow looks promising as long as it doesn't rain.

Envoy and I got in a nice (if a little cool) ride tonight. We just beat the showers. The good thing is now that we have grass, we don't get bad mud like in the winter. Here's to a green spring/summer/fall! Smile

Beautiful day for a ride. Kina and I rode for about 45 minutes until the mosquitoes came out in force. All still quiet in the pasture.

Glad you got to ride for a bit before the dratted skeeters came to ruin your fun. Very glad that things have quieted down in the pasture.

I think part of the reason for the quieter pasture is that I cut Cree's concentrate food (grain). I do NOT feed sweet feed, but it might just be that reduced calories are calming him down. He is fine with just grass. I feed the other stuff just as a treat, so he gets just a tiny bit. Since he doesn't get ridden, and he's 1/2 a breed known for getting fat, he doesn't need many extra calories. He looks just fine a couple weeks after starting this idea, and he is acting like much more of a gentleman.

That's an idea. Grain can really make them high if they're not being
worked.

I didn't know that grain could do that to horses. Interesting. Glad cutting it back seems to be helping restore peace in the pasture.

Normally, whole grains covered in molasses (sweet feed) is what gets them all pumped up, but some horses just don't need any concentrated feed. Kina does since she's older. Envoy gets it since he works. Cree is in good flesh without it, so he gets a handful to keep him happy while the others eat theirs. They don't get much either. I know people who feed pounds and pounds of stuff. That would be way too expensive for me, and I would have one crazy gelding. Smile

Oh, so it's kinda like a sugar high for kids? My neighbors in particular bounce off the walls if they have sugary cereal in the morning.
