Today is spring shots day. Of course, the weather is wet and chilly. I'll have to bring the kids in early to dry off for the vet. They're wearing sheets, but I want her to be able to give me a good opinion on Kina's coat and weight. I think I might need to go back to feeding her more grain. She looks slim to me. (Envoy looks chubby from spring grass and a winter of alfalfa hay, but he slims down easily. Definitely not fat... Just chubby.)

All is well. Envoy looks great says the vet. Not too fat, but definitely a bit of a hay belly. Smile More riding!

Kina could use a clip and probably should go on senior feed. She's doing ok for such an old lady, but she is showing her age. Poor old girl. She got cookies for being so patient in the cold rain.

Glad all is well. I didn't know they made senior feed for horses but i shouldn't be surprised.

It's a complete feed for horses who can't chew hay/grass well enough to get nutrients. Kina doesn't have that problem. Her teeth are great. But, apparently, she isn't absorbing all the vitamins she needs. I will just need to make sure I don't feed too much. Don't want a chubby old girl. Smile

What a change the weather makes! We've had cold, rainy weather for 3 days, and the horses were mopey. I put their sheets on so they weren't cold and wet, but they were just kind of blah. Today, the sun is shining, and the breeze is pleasant. Amazingly, the humidity isn't too bad. The horses were awake and ready to go attack the grass. Smile I need to drink coffee so the sun can have the same effect on me!

Same here. I tell people I'm solar powered. The horses like cool and sunny. They are droopy and sleepy too when it's gloomy out.

Sunny and hot here today and tomorrow. Of course, Friday is supposed to be hot(ish) and rainy. The horse dentist is coming, so Lord forbid we have nice weather. Razz

It's dentist day. Fortunately, the storms are predicted to hold off. It will be hot, but I've got fans. I'm just hoping that Kina still has all her teeth and that they're in good shape. Old horses often lose teeth, which means special feeding instructions.

All is well and the ponies were angels for Adam, the dentist. He LOVES Kina, and has known her since he was a little kid. (His mom used to be our horse dentist, and she was Kina's when she was a fancy show pony.) Surprisingly, Kina still has all her teeth. One is suspect, and might need to be extracted next year, but it's not that far gone yet. Tonight, they are getting mash for supper. I have some molasses just for a treat since they were such good kids.

I tried to ride today, but it's bike weekend and the wind is high. Envoy took good care of me, but he really wasn't happy about something. He was jumpy and nervous. So, we took the opportunity to work a little on the longe line. He was a good boy, and happy that he didn't need to care for a rider. Tomorrow's another day.

All horses are on high alert on windy days. The wind makes it hard to hear predators, and smells travel funny. They are always a bit more jumpy on windy days.

They're here. The horses braved the wet all day, and really didn't care because the grass is growing like crazy. But, it's getting chilly now so they came in early for supper. They're drying off and munching hay. They'll stay in all night so they can relax, and then out they go tomorrow - mosquitoes, humidity, and showers.

Had a pretty nice, if short, ride today. The May flies are almost gone, so Envoy is a happier boy. He was fine with going until the fly spray started to wear off, and then we were finished. He got a nice shower and went back out to the pasture. The horses will come in for the late afternoon when the bugs just get bad. That gives them the chance to sleep a bit and relax. They'll go out again tonight. The weather is perfect for pasture living!

If only the bugs weren't so bad it would be perfect. We had a huge but short drenching monsoonlike downpour this morning so watch out.

With all this rain the mosquitoes will be horrendous this summer. LordHelpUsAll, I don't want to donate that much blood.

Ours are surprisingly not as bad as I thought they'd be. They're always terrible, but I haven't seen dawn/dusk swarms.

Today was a really nice ride without many bugs. We started, and it was cloudy/cool. As time went, it started to sprinkle, so no bugs and it was perfect temps. The rain wasn't hard enough to soak us, but we were pleasantly damp. It did rain harder later in the afternoon, and I'm sure the horses enjoyed not being hot and attacked.

Tomorrow is Kina's body clip day. I don't know if I'm ready, but it's going to happen - ready or not. Fly sheet is ready to keep her safe until her coat starts to grow back in.

Kina is naked. She seemed relieved to have her thick coat going away. While I was clipping, she stretched her neck out to make sure I got all the fuzzy hairs. The professional clippers and extra blades my friend gave me were great, and it only took about an hour and a half to completely finish. I have extra fly spray on hand, and her fly sheet is ready to go. I don't think she'll need either tomorrow since it's supposed to rain. I'll have to check to be sure she isn't sad about getting wet skin. A #10 blade leaves some hair, but there's not enough there to protect her from much yet.

Of course it stormed like crazy last night and the horses were out. Fortunately, it was a little chilly when I turned out, so I put sheets on. When I checked on them this morning, they were happily munching, so I guess they weren't bothered by the rain. They're in tonight for some rest. I hope this wet time passes, and we dry out a little. Envoy and I are going trail riding on Friday, so we should practice a little.
