2017 garden
I put in lettuce, spinach, arugula, and radishes. I think I might put in potatoes next week, but we'll see what the weather says. The cool weather veggies will be fine with the colder temps forecast for next week. Potatoes... I'm not so sure.

All sounds good except for the radishes.

I love radishes. Today, I ordered the summer veg. Tomatoes, zucchini, beans, and artichokes. I've never tried artichokes before, so we'll see how it goes.

I love them. They're a member of the thistle family. I steam them, cut them in half and scoop the heart out.

I eat them however they come. Grilled.. Steamed... In dip. I sure hope they grow well. I plan to put them in the bed next to the barn where the lettuce is now. It should keep them nice and warm, and sheltered from the worst winds unless we get awful tropical stuff.

Re: 2017 garden
My husband turned the soil in the main part of the garden today. It's a bit wet for putting the tomatoes in, so I set them out where I plan to put them, and will try again tomorrow. The soil is great, but just wet from all the rain. The good thing is that it's pretty light because I added so much "compost" in the fall. So, hopefully, I'll get the tomatoes, squash, and beans in tomorrow. The artichokes will take a couple more weeks to be big enough. They'll go in less rich soil since they are essentially thistles.

Re: 2017 garden
We're planning on tomatoes, multi colored sweet peppers, zucchini, and onions....as soon as it stops raining long enough to put them in.

Sadly Joysanna's Jungle isn't doing well due to all the rain.

Re: 2017 garden
I'm hoping that my stuff survives. The tomatoes look ok, and the basil is actually getting happy. I haven't seen any sign of zucchini and beans, but the seeds have only been in for about 4 days.

Re: 2017 garden
Zucchini and beans are up! The artichokes are hanging on for dear life. The cold weather the other didn't do them any favors. I put in marigold seeds yesterday. I can't wait to see their smiling faces.

Re: 2017 garden
I put flowers in today. I had a bunch of marigolds and vinca, so those went in the front. And cockscomb around the bird feeders in the front. I still have some begonias and an interesting flower I don't recognize to put in the back, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. I ran out of energy.

Re: 2017 garden
I have sweet peppers, Brussels sprouts, spinach in plant pots doing quite well so far. More sweet peppers and zucchini in the raised garden bed. One day no sprouts, next day had zucchini leaves the size of my thumbprint poking out of the dirt.....growing by leaps and bounds since then. I only planted 7 seeds since mom said a few probably won't sprout at all. I have a feeling I'm going to be up to my eyeballs in zucchini this fall. We also have tomatoes, cucumbers, and parsnips growing in there. The neighbors are watching our vertical garden in progress with some interest...even the ones who can barely walk manage to get out there to take a much closer look.

That's great. (You can have my share of Brussels sprouts.) My zucchini are doing great. I see the first flowers starting to come out. I put up lattices for them to climb if they want to, but so far, they are just happy, bushy plants.

Re: 2017 garden
Got my other plants in a pot now and last nights rain sure perked them up from being transplanted. Flowers all over the tomato plants, which are growing like weeds. Cucumber is climbing, zucchini is too now. No flowers on those yet.

Re: 2017 garden
Just found a volunteer squash coming up from the compost. No clue what kind it is yet. Maybe it's a fall squash. The summer zucchini are starting to show flowers and little fruits, and this one is just leaves that are peeking out through a big ragweed that is on the pull out list.

Re: 2017 garden
Some tomatoes should be ready in a week or so. I harvested the first squash and a BUNCH of basil. The squash seem to have been attacked by beetles. Some of the fruits are looking rotten. That's not good and I don't know what to do to get the beetles off the plants.

Still no ripe tomatoes. I found the first tomato worm today. YUCK. I squish them, but it grosses me out every time.

Re: 2017 garden
My muskmelon didn't make it, the flowers didn't either. Too much rain. Zucchini has several almost ready to be picked! First thing I've managed to grow beyond greenery......still nothing on the Brussels sprouts, peppers, and the spinach is puny.

Re: 2017 garden
Yeah, I did almost get those to grow. At least the zucchini is doing okay so far and everything else hasn't died yet. I also now have 3 tiny green peppers on one plant, about the size of a small pea.
