Disturbing news from Westchester
The SPCA says they have found the remains of nearly 3 dozen dogs, cats and a lizard in bags along a ramp to the Hutchinson River parkway in Harrison., in various stsges of decomposition
They have determined that they had been euthanised before they were dumped.
Sounds to me like some local vet wantd to save money by not paying for disposal costs. What would be devastating to me is if the pets were supposed to be cremated and the vet just gave the poor parents some ashes or such and then just dumped the poor babies

That hasn't been confirmed yet but they think it is the most plausible option, that or a shelter . Either way it's deplorable.

Re: Disturbing news from Westchester
It could be a hoarder or a mill or a pet crematory person who did that. I can't believe it was a vet. My best guess is a crematory that got overwhelmed and dumped the bodies. They would have received properly euthanised animals from vet or shelter and, for whatever reason, couldn't dispose of them as promised. Still, any way you look at it, it's a shameful desecration of the deceased entrusted into their care. Even if one can't cope, there are better ways.
I feel awful for the pet parents who will find out about this. I feel a bit better about the animals themselves. Knowing that they passed peacefully before any of this happened is some comfort. I hope the city will at least give their reamains a decent burial.

I agree with you Suzzz, I saw this story a day or so go on FB. There is a very interesting page
called Adopt A Poody. They have some really interesting and stories. The person who runs it does a great job,
no trolls and no bad behavior. Little testiness sometimes but no rudeness.

Whoever did that desecration is dispicable IMHO. There is no excuse for treating the bodies of furkids in that manner. I hope they find whoever is responsible for this and prosecute them to the death!
I also hope the city finds pity and gives these poor furbabes a decent burial. They deserve at least that much.

I need to get this evil thought out of my head. Since whoever decided this was okay to do this to animals, then it's okay to do the same with kids. I know I shouldn't think that way, but that is how I view this kind of treatment of animals.

Well no Fluff, it's not an evil thought. There is a connection between animal abuse and other abuse. Some of
the most infamous serial killers started out with small animals. I will leave you with this thought. According to the
necropsies(sp) were done these animals had been PTS. So their souls had flown and all that was left was an empty shell.
Granted the person handling the corpses should have been more respectful, still what made them living beings had flown.

Re: Disturbing news from Westchester
I just heard that they ave charges a bronx veterinarian with the horrible crime. They say he was taking money from poeple for group cremations and disposal of people's dead pets, then dumping the remains. He is denying it. I haven't seen the papers yet to get more information

I saw that too. They can't charge him with much of anything, still if he was my vet I would be out of
there in a New York minute.

I hope the owners all sue him , and if I lived in that area I'd be papering the streets with flyers about him

Re: Disturbing news from Westchester
As cold as it sounds, I think they can only sue for fraud. The animals were dead, so there won't be any cruelty charges
but fraud is very likely. He charged for the cremation and didn't have performed. As I commented in an earlier post their
souls had flown the only thing that was left was the shell. Still he was incredibly cruel to the owners of these pets.

Yes, I meant the same thing that they should sue for fraud, and at least try and recoup some of ther money that was paid to this charlatan.
I would like to see him lose all his practice. I wouldn't trust him at all with my live pets

Unfortunately, we have a similar horrifying story having to do with human remains in a Chicago south side cemetery, called Burr Oaks. It raised the issue that there are some very loose policies regarding disposal of human remains as well.

I vaguely remember that.

Re: Disturbing news from Westchester
I mentioned recently that I watched 60 Minutes quite by accident a week or so ago, and one of the segments speaks directly to this issue (for humans). Oversight of the funeral business is apparently sketchy at best. The link below takes you (I hope) to the 60 Minutes website where you can see (or read) the segment for yourself, if you're interested.

Topic-wise, the core problem remains: that pets/animal companions/animals on this planet have zero rights in this human-dominated world. They have always been considered chattel, even the best and brightest species in the wild, and those who are clearly family members in domesticity. Unless that changes, monsters like the one here will face nothing more than charges of money fraud, and piddling charges at that.

Neither would I. There should be more oversight into the disposal of remains, human or furkid. I know human remains can be considered a biohazard if not disposed of properly. Don't know about furkids..... either way they should be at least dealt with respect.

Re: Disturbing news from Westchester
there was a case recently where a woman (a celebrity but I don't remember who) wanted to be buried with her previously cremated pets, and the cemetary would not allow it. I'm not sure how this was resolved beacuse I'm having a senior moment

Re: Disturbing news from Westchester
I'm sure she found a different cemetary that would allow it. I've heard of a pet cemetary that allowed the humans' cremains to be added to the pets urn (don't remember where it is though). Either that, or you just have someone sneak the lil urn into the casket just before it's closed for good.

I just heard on the news this morning that more dog remains have been found in garbage bags at the side of another highway in Westchester., near Rye. Some seem to be "new' and some old. Nothing further so far.
