Re: garden attempts 2014
Poor guy got a tick in his ear for his efforts. But, his fancy collar killed it, so all we had to do was remove its body.
I got the first harvest of radishes today. Spicier than the ones from the store. YUM. Looks like I might get lettuce by the end of the week. I also got a big bag of spinach from a friend's garden. More YUM.

Garden looks good, guard dog does too. Glad the collar did it's work. Your gardening season is off to a good start with radishes and lettuce already being harvested! I envy you.............

One of the bulbs that I planted in a pot is starting to come up. I bought some bulbs called Mexican Hat Flowers? from a rescue group that was having a fund raiser. I hope the ones come up that I planted in the herb bed come up

Re: garden attempts 2014
I put in some elephant ear bulbs and some Hawaiian ginger bulbs, and then we got a ton of rain. I was sure they were flooded and gone. A few survived and are popping up. Can't wait to see my little slice of Hawaii.
I also have some elephant ears in big pots on the porch. They'll give Bingo some shade from the afternoon sun.

Re: garden attempts 2014
I see the first baby tomatoes! I think they're the cherries, but I just planted and didn't mark. I like a surprise. Unfortunately, there's no sign of sprouting squash. The radishes are going crazy, the lettuce is wonderful, and the boo choi is almost ready to harvest. Cauliflower is getting bigger, but there's still no sign of edible stuff, and the kohlrabi looks like it's doing well. I don't really know how to tell when that's ready to harvest.

I would kill for the bok choi. I love it sauteed with spinach.

I'd love to have that bok choi for stirfry! You might have to look it up online to tell when that's ready to harvest.

Re: garden attempts 2014
Oh. The bok choi is easy to tell. It's the kohlrabi. I know it has strange "arms" that hold the leaves and a big bulb at the bottom. I think the bulb part will poke up through the soul a little kind of like radishes. Sue and Fiff, I think you could easily grow bok choi in pots. It has been really easy to grow. Just like spinach or lettuce.
The snow peas are sprouting, and the beans are going up fast. I think I see 2 squash plants sprouting. I think it is going to be a good veggie summer.

Does it need a lot of sunlight? If so, I'm sunk.

Re: garden attempts 2014
Not a lot, but some helps. Mine is in full sun, and I am going to have to pick it all before the sun gets farther north. It'll scorch the leaves then.

How long does it take to grow? I might be moving in two months......maybe more but maybe not. Is that enough time?

Re: garden attempts 2014
Probably not, but if you have a shady spot, it should grow fine in the summer. Or, you could wait until August to plant for a fall crop.

Might not have enough time then either...winter arrived here big time last year around Oct. 15th.

Re: garden attempts 2014
I think it would do fine that way. If it gets too cold, you could bring it inside at night and put it back on the porch while the sun's out. It is pretty hearty stuff.

Re: garden attempts 2014
Window has no ledge unfortunately. I have to use a tv tray to put my fan at window level to even use it to blow cooler air inside. And I block the window with carshades during the day to keep the heat out. Otherwise my bedroom would be an oven!

Re: garden attempts 2014
Just bring it in/take it out when it gets cold. It should be fine as long as daytime temps aren't under freezing.
I figured out how the kohlrabi grows. the bulb is above the soil. I have one that is getting ready, and the arms are growing around what will be the bulb. It looks really neat. I'll try to take pix this weekend.

Re: garden attempts 2014
can't have a garden outside although someone (I suspect the super) has planted one in the narrow strip of grass on the side of the building.
my attempt has been to repot one of the plants on the windowsill, and plant some wildflower seeds in a pot on the sill.
and I just threw a few seed bombs in the soil at the front of the building

Gardening on the sly huh? Good for you lovekitties. I'm sure those flowers in the seed bombs will be appreciated by everyone as long as the building super doesn't have them mowed over.

Re: garden attempts 2014
I've got some flower seedlings coming up in my pot on the windowsill. Might try some chives. I got a free envelope of seeds at the book expo.
Don't know how my stealth seeds are doing downstairs in the front. hard to tell what's weeds and what's flowers. LOL
