Adventures in kitten rescue Empty Adventures in kitten rescue

Post by gbste Fri Oct 07, 2011 11:22 pm

Tuesday evening we picked up two eight-week old feral kittens from a man who is helping with TNR here in town. They had fleas, so we set them up in a large wire dog crate on the front porch. It's been unseasonally warm here, plus we have a trusty Snuggle Safe disc if it gets cold, so we thought they'd be fine. Wednesday morning, I went out to feed them at first light, and they were both gone! We looked everywhere, and saw no sign of them. I thought they had somehow broken out of the crate, and Kevin thought someone had taken them in the night. Thursday morning, they appeared on the front porch, but I was unable to trap them before I had to go to school. Last night at sunset, we saw them frolicking in the front yard. (So they must have escaped on their own. I'll have to figure out what happened there.) I tried to trap them, but no luck. I set the trap again this morning, but when I got home from school, it was still empty; however, once the sun went down, the kittens re-emerged from hiding, and one at a time, they went into the trap. They are spending the night in a large cat crate on the front porch. They have a little litter box, a fleece blankie, and food and water. In the morning I'll see if I can bathe them (one was fairly easy to handle once trapped, the other, not so much) to kill fleas and transfer them into a large plastic dog crate. They are beautiful little girls--one siamese mix and one tortie/tabby. I'll get them tamed down and start looking for a place for them. We're not supposed to take any more cats into the rescue right now, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I'll be checking with some cat rescues in the Springs to find a spot for them. The "big city" folks have partnerships with Petco and Petsmart. These girls are gorgeous and should be very adoptable once tamed.

They sound like very smart lil ones to escape the trap like that. Also smart that they came back. I hope they quickly learn the joys of being around peoples. I'd love to see pics! Which one was friendlier: the tortie or the siamese mix?

Here's a photo of the 'fraidy cats. The tortie is slightly more friendly, but both of them allowed me to soak them in warm soapy water and then flea comb them without much fuss. They were probably too freaked out to cause too much trouble. Fiff, I'll email you the picture.

We have named the tortie Darcy and the siamese Kenna. They still hate us, but they allow me to handle them just fine. Kenna cusses me the whole time, but then she'll hide her eyes in the crook of my elbow and snuggle in at the same time, so she's coming around. Darcy just has a "this too shall pass" attitude. cat

Sounds like Kenna definitely has the siamese penchant for talking a lot. I'm sure they'll both come around in time. And they are so adorable! Once they figure out peoples are nice to be around, they will have no problem finding a great home.
