You know it's spring when........
You see the first robins of spring! I saw an entire flock of them Thursday afternoon on my way home from work. And a few small houseflies too.

Unfortunately, the "robins test" doesn't work for me here in SNJ - robins have been here all thru the winter, FLOCKS of them - same way last winter!

I saw Robins last winter, but not this one. Odd, since this one was so much milder. Birdbrains! They're back in force now though.

Butterflies, I've got to get the camera out. Not only butterflies but the cardinals and
bluejays are in full cry.

I've got bluejays on my bird feeder giving me the stink eye. I'm out of sunflower seeds and peanuts! I'll have to stock up today.

I have a new groundhog on my work corner. I think it's a female, this one is about 2/3 the size Gauge was (he died of old age). I always knew it was spring for good when I'd see Gauge out and about for breakfast along the fence. This new one scampered across the road just like a ferret runs (have you seen one run?) and the traffic stopped and kids were pointing at it in awe. She went right to Gauge's old den by the fence under the tree roots, then started munching on stuff along both sides of the fence just like he used to. I hope it's female and I get to watch babies grow up this spring...........I've never seen baby groundhogs before, just one pic I found online.

I'm just dreading new baby feral kitties even though i love kitties. I'll have to see if any congregate at Foodman's this year. If I can catch them early enough i might end up adopting one or two. I really regret that I didn't take frisky home last year. If I had she might not have ended up under that car

My mom will eventually put the humming bird feeder this year. Did I ever told about what a stray did at the humming bird feeder last year? The cat did end up at Animal Control, but not because of humming birds.

Re: You know it's spring when........
Last summer, my parents had two stray cats that were hanging around the house majority of the summer. One was a grey tiger tabby cat. He discovered the hummingbird feeder that was hanging on a Shepard's hook that was no more than five feet tall. He even noticed that hummingbirds were coming and going to the feeder and got the idea of hanging around the feeder. One day he managed to jump into the air to get a hummingbird. Yes, the bird was dead. Then, some weeks later, my dad saw the same cat playing in the backyard near the oak tree. My dad went to see what the cat was playing with. It was another hummingbird that the cat had caught. The real reason this cat went to animal control was that he was hanging around the house every day and not coming and going like the other stray cats have done.

What a shame two hummers died before the cat was dealt with. I have a feeling the hummers might be early this year because of the warm weather. My mom bought a hummer feeder to add to Bij's shepard's hook. Brad has his hanging out already, just in case there are early arrivals.
You also know spring has sprung when your building suddenly becomes overrun with baby houseflies! I've also seen the first knats of spring at work, and a few whatsit beetles flying around. Oh, and the tulip plants are already over 6 inches out of the ground.
