I saw a Red Admiral butterfly flitting around the yard yesterday afternoon! This is the earliest I've ever seen a butterfly in my entire life, by nearly 2 months.

pink flowers on several of the neighborhood trees. I'm not sure what variety they are.
The forsythia in front of my house is getting very yellow, and the violets are starting to come up all over the lawn

I don't follow MLB, so I wouldn't know any different about the different colors of Sox. Speaking of baseball, there's spring training. Baseball season will be starting soon.

I see all sorts of flying buggers now, the daffodils are blooming a month early, and so are the flowering trees. I just noticed a yardful of lil violets this morning too.
My lil groundhog must've moved on closer to the river, away from the noise of the highschoolers using that practice field. Haven't seen her in days now..... I saw a bald eagle this morning though.

a bald eagle is well worth seeing. We can sometimes see them in NYC also. They have a breeding program for them in Inwood (the northern tip of Manhattan)

everything is blloming earlier than usual. The cherry blossoms are already out at the Brooklyn Botanical garden. You know you live in a big city when you actually have 4 Botanical gardens, 5 zoos and an aquarium.

We have stuff blooming all over a month early too, including the daffodils and tulips. Around here they don't bloom until Mother's Day or after.
We had an older male robin just sitting in the grass in my front yard yesterday. My neighbor was concerned so had me look him over. I almost picked him up but he kept hopping away just a few inches at a time, would NOT fly. I think he was one of the males I saw sparring over a tree earlier in the day, and was probably either exhausted from the battle or slightly hurt. I couldn't tell which. I did tell her he was an old robin, not a youngster as she thought he was. (they have speckled breasts until they're at least a year old) I don't think I've ever seen an elderly male robin before, but he had some speckled feathers around his eyes and cheeks that younger adults ones don't have, with a fully red breast. But those face feathers reminded me of gray whiskers on a human.

Re: You know it's spring when........
I saw a chickadee on Saturday. This is the first time I've ever seen one in my 25 years living in this neighborhood.
This morning the dawn chorus was really racketing. saw some birds doing really off thinhs. I'm thinking a courting ritual. I couldn't tell the species, but I think they were starlings.
supposed to go down to below freezing tonight, even colder in the suburbs. I hope it doesn't nip things in the bud

I love Chickadees. I get to see them all the time. They have such a cheerful little call.
Re: You know it's spring when........
That they do. Mockingbirds have sweet call if they are screaming at something.

I was right about the courting ritual. It was a starling and he was back this morning. I looked it up on the net and he was telling a nearby female that he's got a nest set up and wants her to join him.

Re: You know it's spring when........
There has been a bird call that I had been trying and trying to identify for many years. It was one that I would only hear early in spring and usually early in the morning. It was a sweet sounding FEE-bee-bee. I FINALLY found out just a few weeks ago that it's my old buddy the Chickadee! I never knew that they had a particular mating call.
