It's raining kittens!
Sunday evening I got a call from one of our local ACOs. His son had found 2 baby kittens in the yard, and they have no way to care for them. I picked them up, and they are tiny! Their eyes have only just opened, and they can't walk real well yet. There's a black female and a siamese male. I got them to eat some formula and kept them warm. Monday morning, they went to stay with another volunteer who is fostering a lactating mama cat. Mama was sad because 2 of her kittens were adopted on Saturday, but now she has the tiny ones, plus 2 others that had been found in a towed car. All the kittens are getting supplemental formula, but the mama cat is nursing and caring for the whole brood, and everyone is happy.
Today I got a call from a man who is trying to trap some feral cats for TNR. He caught 3 kittens, and there are 2 more he missed. I picked up 3 hissy spitty kitties--2 gorgeous siamese females and an orange tabby with white male. These are about 7 weeks old. I have them tucked into a dog crate in my bathroom. They've put a pretty good dent in the kitten food I gave them. They don't want to be held, but they'll get over that soon, as they're pretty young.
Meanwhile, a student wants me to take 3 kittens from his house. He hasn't been able to catch them, and he has a pretty short attention span, so maybe he'll be distracted. If he gets them, I'll have to set up kitten quarters on my front porch again, as I don't want to mix litters until everyone has vacs. Sheesh!

Indeed, that time of year. *sigh* How lucky for the infants that there was a lactating Mama sweet enough to "adopt"! And lucky for all of them that you and your cohorts are so willing to help, Gbste. Hoping the stoner, er, student, gets his act together enough to save his batch.

Where is a stray cat haven when you need one? I'm glad there are people that are willing to try to find groups and/or foster parents to take in the strays.

Well, I now have 6 hissy spitties in 2 crates in my bathroom. Actually, one of the newer kitties is nearly tame. Got 3 little girls, DMH, 2 black, one grey tabby. I'm reaching out to my kitty rescue contacts tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

This is why shelters kill figures spike in the spring.

Re: It's raining kittens!
Our "shelter" does not pick up or impound cats at all. Our town has no ordinances at all dealing with cats. In a way, that's a good thing. The ACOs sic people on me (or call me themselves if kittens appear in their yard) and then I can usually help. As bad as things are for dogs in shelters, cats have it worse. Most of them don't make it out alive.

Re: It's raining kittens!
It's definitely kitten season! I know our local shelter is usually overwhelmed with lil ones this time of year. Remember when I found Itty Bitty? I had to beg and plead that there had to be room for 'just one more lil guy". Thankfully one of the office staff agreed with me and took him in so I wouldn't get evicted over having him.
Why is it Fate conspires to put a kitten in my life when I am in no position to keep it? This has happened to me twice now, and my heart got broken having to give them up both times.

Re: It's raining kittens!
One of our other volunteers has agreed to foster the three latest kittens. I will take them over to her place after school today.
I empathize with you, Fif. I've had to excuse myself and go cry in the bathroom at adoption fairs when the babies I've worked so hard to bring back to life go off to their new homes. As a rescue volunteer, I think those furbabes we are supposed to help are dropped into our path. It's hard to give them up, but I'd never sleep again if I had left Tess at the dog pound or Diego and Bernardo at the dumpster. If I didn't love them, I'd be a crappy foster mom. Those we can't keep we are just meant to help along the path a little.

Re: It's raining kittens!
I got the three girls off to my fellow volunteer Desiree. Just in time, too. The little tiger girl reminds me very much of Elsie, a kitty I had as a kid. Sending her off was gonna be tough if it didn't happen soon.

Priya is pretty tame now. She seeks out attention and purrs when held. The other two are still pretty skittish, but we're working on it..
