Re: Everyone is home
Typical mare... New horse shows up and she goes into blazing season. Doesn't matter that it is cold and dark outside.

Didn't know that about mares.

She's a feisty little thing, so she'll keep him in line even though he thinks he's a stud. Of course, he greeted her with all the evidence that he knew what she was asking for. (YUCK) I told his new mom that a shot of depoprovera might be a good thing if it doesn't all settle down. One for the mini and one for Cree! It's what we had to do when he met Kina. But, eventually, he did settle down even without hormonal intervention.

Here is Cree with his new little friend. I saw his little girl at the store yesterday. She is so excited about him. I can't believe he found such a perfect match.

Apparently, she has the attitude of a Thelwell pony too.
Envoy and Kina are getting used to Cree's absence. Kina looked for him all weekend, but now she's just trying to boss Envoy around.

Re: Everyone is home
Tomorrow is "buy more hay" day. I can't believe we've gone through so much already. It's been a weird year. I need to buy higher quality stuff this time. The last batch was okay, but it did have some weeds and sticks in it. I hate paying for stuff my horses won't eat. grrr...

Ah...they were in my other inbox. Very cute...the mini looks just like him.
**better hay vibes** Hope these help you find some affordable good stuff for the ponies. Are they still looking for Cree?

They have pretty much accepted that Cree is not coming back. I think if he visits for a ride in the summer, he'll fit right in.
I sure hope the hay isn't stupidly expensive. I am borrowing money for this load. I hate doing that.

Re: Everyone is home
It's done. 2 tons of hay are getting delivered on Tuesday -- weather permitting. I got 20 bales in the truck to start them on the really tasty stuff. It wasn't stupidly expensive, but it was more than enough. I hope it lasts us until grass starts to grow. It's crazy how much they are eating this winter. The grass just didn't hold out as long as I thought it would.

I will be hoping for an early spring for you (and us too). Maybe with only two ponies now they won't go through the hay as quickly as last winter?

Thank goodness that 2 eat 1/3 less than 3. I hope I won't need more hay before spring.

Re: Everyone is home
Envoy and I had a nice ride yesterday, and Kina and I had one today. The weather is lovely for December, and we're enjoying it.
They are being fussy about the old hay. I bought a truckload of the hay that's getting delivered tomorrow. It's alfalfa, and that makes the plain old timothy hay so BORING.

Okay I've had picky cats and dogs but never a picky horse. Would mixing it help if not would a rescue take it.

They'll eat it. They just prefer the expensive stuff. I'll mix it once I get the big delivery tomorrow. Silly ponies!

Of course you also have to get them past the novelty of having new hay. They prefer the more expensive stuff....if you had to eat hay wouldn't you prefer it too?

Re: Everyone is home
Most definitely I would. They are celebrating the new stuff. It makes them thirsty, but that's good in winter. If horses don't drink enough, they can colic. I have a heated tank outside, so their water doesn't freeze, but they can have some hay that makes them drink more. I won't complain!

If it keeps them healthy I won't complain either.
Do the neighborhood birds take advantage of the fact their trough doesn't freeze? I know ours would.

Re: Everyone is home
I haven't noticed birds drinking from the tank, but it's behind the barn. I can't really see it well.
I need to coordinate winter plans. I don't know yet if we are really going to boarding school or not. I hope so because riding in the winter at home is almost impossible. But, my friend/trainer has a new horse, so Kina's normal stall and paddock are occupied. I am hoping that she can live in the barn, and share Envoy's turnout during the day. I bed and clean my own stalls, so it's just a matter of finding room.
