I keep looking for more tomatoes, but the two I had were it for now. It's early for them, but I'm so ready!

Re: garden attempts 2014
One of the kohlrabi is ready to pick. I'll take pix tomorrow.
The lettuce is bolting, and the radishes I didn't pick yet are going to seed. The big garden with tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash is going crazy. I need to take out the hay string and tie up the crazy tomato plants.

Re: garden attempts 2014
My grandpa has a small garden in his front yard, obscured from the road by the shrubbery. The wild chickens had to be chased out several times so they wouldn't eat his red and green peppers.
I actually missed hearing the crowing and clucking of the wild chickens for the past few days.

Double yum! I LOVE watermelon. Still expensive here, but they'll be coming in from the gardens any day now. People sell them off truck beds out here.

Re: garden attempts 2014
We've had watermelon the past few days too. Schnucks ad had them at $2.99 for seedless.....Walmart honors that ad so we got them there. Nice big ones too....all but one was sweet but still not as good as the one I ate in Florida. Maybe when the local produce hits the market IF they don't get flooded out first? The melon can stay on the vine getting sweeter since it isn't picked so early for shipment.

I bought a local cantaloupe this past weekend. It was delicious. I wonder if the blueberry farm is open for picking. I love cantaloupe and blueberries together. I need to pick pounds and pounds of blueberries to freeze for winter.

Re: garden attempts 2014
The tomato plants are winding down. They are turning brown, and looking sad. I'm not ready for the season to be over. Some local farmers have plants that will give fruit until October, so I'm not totally out of luck. But, the wonderful summer of tomatoes and basil is coming to an end. We'll see if the sweet potatoes will do anything for fall, and I will put in some kale and bok choi seeds for fall too.
The squash plants won't give up. They're still producing like crazy.

Re: garden attempts 2014
the seed bombs I sneaked into the front of the house never took, or were whacked by the super., and the wildflowers I had growing on my windowsill did not survive a particulary hot weekend before I realized they were not getting any water from the reservoir of the pot I had them in

I figured out why my catnip was dying. The pot wasn't draining properly and it was flooded. It also explains why my thme wasn't doing well. It's underneath the catnip planter to catch the water.

Re: garden attempts 2014
I've always completely ignored herbs, and they do well. I guess I'm lucky. I have basil, thyme, and rosemary in a couple planters, and then other basil planted with the tomato plants. The basil is still going crazy. I will have to make some pesto to freeze.

Re: garden attempts 2014
Speaking of basil, I raided my neighbors lemon basil for a pasta salad kit. I should have skipped the kit and just had the lemon basil with tomatoes with my pork chop.

Yum! I had tomato salad with regular and lemon basil before yesterday's dinner. Tonight, I think we'll put some basil on tomatoes and mozzarella for a Caprese salad.

Re: garden attempts 2014
The fall harvest has begun. These are from a surprise sweet potato that I found in the back of the potato basket. It had sprouted, so I stuck it in the ground. Amazing things, potatoes.
These have to sit for a few weeks so they get sweet. Right now, they would taste like paste.

My sis' tomatoes are producing so much we can't pick or eat them all. Thankfully the local wildlife is helping us.
