Pierce, you have nothing absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Suzzz is right
when employeers look at young people they like to see that even if you have haven't
been working at a paying job they like to see that you haven't been sitting on your backside.

Then there is health issues.

If you can work past your health issues, an animal shelter would LOVE to have you as a volunteer!! When I helped run a shelter over in Lansing (before I lost my job over there ), getting volunteers was even more difficult than fundraising! Many people were afraid that they would want to adopt every animal that they would come across...so they didn't try! Some in this forum have already alluded to this. So if you are brave enough, please try an animal shelter! Who knows, you may just find the perfect dog that way! :-)

I am afraid of wanting to aopt everyone there but I do have some restraint.

Actually wanting to take them all home wasn't my problem. It was the politics and policies at the
SPCA where I was volunteering at the time. Anyway now I do TNR, in certain ways it's a lot more
satisfiing.
