Re: Everyone is home
Cree does NOT want a fly sheet. I put sheets on this morning because the heat is making the flies pretty terrible. Envoy and Kina walked out and munched happily. Cree started running like a fool. He rolled and shredded his sheet. I took it off and put lots of fly spray on him. Now, he's a happy pony. I'd say I will replace the sheet, but since he seems to hate it, I think I'll save the money.

The horses are happy for the storm. The wind and cooler temperatures are keeping the bugs down. They are outside munching grass and perfectly happy outside. Thank goodness the storm isn't causing many problems.

Glad to hear it......I think you may have to buy fly spray by the gross for Cree. Maybe should invest in stock in a fly spray company so you get some of your money back.

Re: Everyone is home
The best fly protection in the world is a good coating of mud. The storm gave us some good puddles, and all the horses rolled. They were coated. I sprayed them off before dinner so they can go do it again. The bugs really weren't too bad because the weather is so beautiful. Later this week, it's going to get HOT again, so the horses will be out at night and in during the days. Being under the fans should keep the flies at bay. They get really bad in the hot, hot weather.

An incredible day of fun riding with Envoy and his friends, Stormy and Savannah. We went to my trainer's house, and rode around the neighborhood. We visited neighbor horses, and talked with some people too. Envoy had a very good day, and seemed quite happy to get out of the ring for a day. Good pony!

Tomorrow is supposed to be dangerously hot. I am working at home since the water treatment people are coming to do the maintenance on our system. The horses will be in stalls with fans on, and I'll check on them often. They're out tonight, and I'll let them stay out until it starts getting icky. Fortunately, we have one of those indoor/outdoor thermometers with a sensor in the barn.

That's good, as long as it doesn't get so hot the thermometer breaks.
Stay cool!

They did just fine. I didn't have much time to spend with them today, though. It took me 2.5 hours to drive home from work. Sigh... They are enjoying a night inside since it's raining, and they don't like to lie down in soggy grass.

No riding again today either. The temps are great, but it's awfully soggy. Tomorrow is supposed to be wet too, but the weekend is going to be nice. It will be nice to get back to riding. Maybe my new helmet will be here by then. I've been using an old one since the wrens decided to nest in my newest one.

Re: Everyone is home
Have those eggs hatched yet? I saw the pic.....those birds sure were determined to have a very protected nest.
We're supposed to get a summer polar vortex because of the hurricane remnants. Will you get that cool bit too? And if this summer is cooler than usual, what does that mean for next winters' weather?

I haven't seen or heard babies yet. The birds are sitting on the nest a lot, so I think the eggs are still eggs. I won't move the helmet until all signs of birds are gone. I'd hate to ruin it for the little family.

Too hot for riding today. We did stalls, hosed the horses, and brought them in. We bought fans to put on the floor so they have wall mounted fans AND fans that blow in the doors. We're trying to keep the flies away, and give the horses some relief from the heat. At least we're just getting short blasts of heat. Wednesday is supposed to be very nice.

Re: Everyone is home
Today was farrier day. He came at 6 AM. The horses were out all night since the weather's so nice, and they were good and sleepy. It was funny to watch them snooze as their feet got trimmed.

They must've been tired from all that overnight partying!

The cooler weather means they're more active. I guess that includes after dark. Pony parties!

Re: Everyone is home
Had a great ride on Kina today. We didn't do anything really exciting, just had a nice, quiet walk/trot ride. The weather is PERFECT.
Now, the horses are napping in the barn. I'll let them out before we go to bed. The bugs aren't bad when it's cool, so the horses don't mind not having fans right now.

Another great ride on Envoy. He's such a good boy. I need to get those stifles injected, so we're just walking these days. But, he does some good work at the walk. He's calmed down so much in the last few years, and seems perfectly happy just to walk. I wish it wasn't so buggy on the trails. He really enjoys going out in the woods. But, right now, it's just too buggy for both of us.

Glad you got to have some fun with the 'kids'. Question: why does Envoy need his stifles injected? Are they sore?

Re: Everyone is home
I think Envoy's stifles have been sore for a few years. He has always had a weakness there, and now, he stumbles over his front feet, and pushes to the side with his right hind leg rather than pushing straight. It's like having arthritis in your knee. When it doesn't work right, everything else gets a bit weird. The vet diagnosed it a couple years ago, and the injections helped a lot. Unfortunately, they're EXPENSIVE.
Had a nice ride with him today. He had the world's slowest spook when the lawnmower next door backfired. He kind of hopped to the side, looked really embarrassed, and then continued on. Good pony!

Re: Everyone is home
It absolutely POURED yesterday. I tried to ride Kina before the rain, but we started getting pretty wet, so we came in. My husband and I had to walk out to the pasture to get Cree and Envoy. We were drenched in about 2 seconds. There was NOTHING dry on us. The barn kind of flooded too. Kina's stall has a roof leak, and everything was wet. We had to strip and re-bed it. Today, we left fans running and the bedding pushed to the walls in an attempt to dry things up. So far, so good.

Fortunately, the weather is wonderful now. The horses are out a lot, and the stalls are drying nicely. Tomorrow is riding day. I worked late today.

That reminds me. When I was in Kentucky I took two nice pictures of a foal at Two Bucks Farm and took two nice ones of the Winstar training facility. I've put them on FB.
