Re: home again home again
I'm pretty sure Sabi and Luke are ripping around having a good time now.
I had planned to ride today, but the mosquitoes decided otherwise. No riding, but plenty of bites while I did barn chores. Horses seem oblivious to the biters. I put fly sheets on so they don't get bled dry.

Re: home again home again
No relief here, and we're expecting a lot of rain on Thursday from Hurricane Michael. Really, Mother Nature, we don't need that. It's supposed to cool down next week, which might help things. I'm interested to see if Ruby will throw some mare hijinks in the cool weather.
I ordered her blanket a couple days ago. We should be ready for winter when it decides to show up.

We're underwater again here too. I didn't go feed the away groups last night because of the rain. Hopefully the rain will hold off and there will be a dry place tonight.

My fingers are crossed. I saw a new orange kitty down the street. He/she was jumping the full ditch to go into the woods. I hope he/she was going to a dry place. The weather is horrible. Wind and rain from Michael is here. Nothing like the weather in Florida, and I'm thankful for that. But the wild ones are having a rough night. The only good thing is that this thing is moving fast and will be gone soon. Tomorrow's weather is supposed to be breezy, but sunny and cool. Maybe it will help to dry things up a bit.

Today was beautiful. Sunny, crisp weather and breezy. After last night's excitement, it was so nice. The horses were tucked into the leaky barn last night, and stayed dry. They were very happy to go out without the mosquito swarms and warm humidity. They're going back out for the night with hay nets on the fence. The grass is going away. I am sad about that.

Oh! Don't get me started... It was supposed to be finished by now. We can't get the guy to give us a start date, and now it's so wet that he wouldn't be able to get equipment behind the barn.

Poor Lu was shivering last night. It was 42 degrees, and he was ready for a sheet. So, plan is for him to stay clothed under 50 degrees, and under 65 if raining. The fatties were fine, but poor thin boy was cold.

Poor guy, then I'd be freezing at 42 too.

Re: home again home again
He was really funny about the sheet. He snorted at it like, "Where have you BEEN?!" It's drizzly today, but he got to stay naked. It's not too chilly, and it's supposed to clear up by lunch time.
I am trying to stretch the leftover hay, so I'm not putting nets out during the day until Nov. 1. Then, it's time to start going through 1 and a half bales every day. Crazy! I need the winter hay soon.

I can imagine. They hay bill has to be painful but then if you feed quality you only cry once.

Re: home again home again
Right you are! I am a hay snob. I won't spend the $16/bale for the absolutely beautiful western orchard hay because I just can't afford that. But, I can stretch dollars to get $9.50/bale NY timothy/alfalfa that the horses like. It isn't as beautiful, but I honestly think it's just as nutritious. I've seen analysis reports on both, and they have differences in sugars and protein, but not significant. So... Medium cost hay fed in prodigious amounts. Sigh... I miss the green grass already.

I think you and I spend more reading nutrition labels for our critters than we do for ourselves.

Human food has labels?
Horses are all mud pies. I'm taking a couple days off to visit a friend, so tomorrow I'll groom and ride before I hit the road. Should make me a mud pie too. Guess I'll need to shower before I get in the car. The joys of ponies!

Ruby ran around the house at supper time. I turned my back for a second and she was out. I am glad she didn't go down the road in the dark. She just ran to the back yard, took a couple bites of grass, then galloped around the house and back to her stall. Silly girl!

Re: home again home again
No frisky horses today. We have a cold, windy rain from the leftover hurricane that hit Mexico. Unbelievable... More awful weather. We were just drying up, and I fully expect the flood to be back in full force tomorrow.
The horses all had sheets on to stay dry, but they were still pretty miserable when they came in early. They are now in stalls with lots of hay. Lu used a wool cooler while his sheet dripped dry for a few hours. Of course, he rolled with it on so it's covered in shavings. He now has his sheet back on so he doesn't get tangled up in a loose cooler. Tomorrow, I'll bush the shavings off the cooler. I'm sure we'll be using it again.

LOL!! I was going to say the cooler will shake out. It's not much better in Kentucky by the way.

Re: home again home again
Finally! A nice day and a few minutes to ride. Lu and I moseyed around for about 1/2 an hour before dark. We didn't do anything exciting except have a quick turn around when the coyotes started barking. Can't blame the little guy. They are on the hunt, and he knows he's on the menu. He walked politely but quickly all the way home.

WHEEE! Ruby is enjoying the sunshine. When she went out this morning, she took off bucking and running. I'm glad I wasn't planning to ride (it's still wet). It could have been a rodeo!

Mudpie! We've had two days with no rain, and Envoy picked the grossest puddle to roll in. It's 30 degrees outside, and I had to brush him so he could fluff his hair. Ugh! Now I'm a mud pie.
