Re: what are YOU thankful for?
That was good Lovekitties.
I'm thankful the migraine I had last night is finally gone! Took a double dose of meds to get rid of it enough to sleep. It was a bad one.

Thankful the bear hasn't gotten to my neighborhood yet. Our birdfeeders would be destroyed!

The one who made the front page of all the newspapers and the tv channels here over the weekend. Only 5 miles from here and multiple sightings.

Re: what are YOU thankful for?
Bear is headed south.....and hasn't been hit, shot at, or harassed. Our governor is signing a quickie law that protects bears, cougars, and other large rare wildlife. Obviously it's now needed. I'm thankful they're acting so quickly to do that.

Re: what are YOU thankful for?
Thankful that my cousin Diana emailed me. Said grandpa really enjoyed my visit (much more than when my sis comes). They're already looking forward to when I can visit again. She wants to stay in touch too....really nice lady and it was the first time I'd met her and her hubby (he's nice too) and of course their pup Woody.

Re: what are YOU thankful for?
It sure is. Turns out I'm the only one on both sides with glaucoma. And my grandma misspelled my dads' name on the birth certificate. He was supposed to be named after his grandfather and uncle. Bet my sis doesn't even know that. Or that a bomb was dropped off by the enemy off the bow of the boat (about 50 yards away) my grandpa arrived on in the Phillipines during the war.

Re: what are YOU thankful for?
I can tell those memories still bother him to this day: we came across his war diary that was issued to him when he was drafted. It lists when he was drafted, where he went for boot camp, where he shipped out to, etc. There were some pictures in there of the base, him in uniform, and his buddies (plus the tiny trailer he and grandma lived in at the time). My dad was barely 2 when grandpa left. Pictures of the lady who did the laundry for the base, a couple of the locals they did business with, etc. were also in there. He told me his job was loading the 100# mortar shells into the anti-aircraft guns...and one time they shot down a plane he could see the face of the enemy pilot they'd just shot. I could tell from his face and voice that memory still haunts him. No wonder he doesn't talk much about it.
I'm thankful that shell dropped by his arriving boat didn't kill him....my grandma would've remarried and moved away and my parents would never have met. And that my grandpa is still alive to tell me about that stuff. How many of you have grandparents in their 90's AND have their memories intact?

Re: what are YOU thankful for?
My mom, who passed away a year and a half ago at the age of 93, and dad, who died much earlier, had shared many stories of the WWII era over the years - all very interesting. Equally interesting were their memories of the Great Depression. That was a real eye-opener as a kid to learn about those times.
Re: what are YOU thankful for?
They didn't talk much about the Depression....but I could see the lessons they learned. Don't waste anything, make do, learn to do for yourself if you can't afford to hire someone (like painting, laying brick, home repairs, etc). My grandma was a very creative person, and my grandpa built a lot of stuff from trailers to furniture. I'm thankful I got to learn some of that stuff from them when I was a kid...those skills have come in handy over the years.
