Crisis...anyone? Empty Crisis...anyone?

Post by fluffnstuff Tue Jun 22, 2010 7:54 pm

My parents still have a land line even though they have cell phones. The land line phones went out during the past weekend and it has been report to the phone company, only to find out someone will come by a certain date to fix it.

Probably something got damaged in the junction box from all the storms. Do your neighbors have the same problem?

My dad did go to one next door neighbor to ask them, but only find out from the adult kids that they are on vacation and didn't know. The other next door neighbor is another story and my dad isn't comfortable asking that neighbor. The neighbor my dad doesn't want to ask is having issues he doesn't want to get involved in nor does he want to know about it. I did mention a neighbor across the street, but he didn't bother to ask that neighbor.

I still have a land line, so to speak, as in I have a home phone, but it's a VOIP line. Of course, when the power went out, so did the computer and the internet, so no land line for me either until we were back up and operational again. Of course, I forgot that, and my mom was trying to call... She called the cell phone too, which is exactly what I told her to do in a situation like that, but since I had forgotten about that, I also forgot to put my cell in a spot where I could hear it. I'll try to remember that next time.

In case anyone was wondering, Sue aka Zed's Aunt from the previous forum is computer-less for the time being. She's emailed me to say she's fine and will be back in here as soon as she can.

My parents phone decided to start working again. Very Happy The first clue the phone was working was that it rang once, so now that crisis is over for them.

i really believe in having both a cell (for when you're out and about for emergencies) and a land line at home. i hate those phones that are through the computer...if the computer isn't working nothing works! if they worked i'd get one of those cheapo ones you get at radio shack and it costs maybe $20 for the entire year..jupiter jack or something its called.

My VOIP is through T-Mobile, and it's only $10/mo, compared to the $40+ that I used to pay AT&T - and that didn't include long distance. T-Mobile includes nationwide long distance. The only rub is the fact that it fails when the internet goes down, but we do have cells in that case...if I'd just remember to take mine out of my purse so I can hear it ring!

At least my parents have cell phones in addition to the land line. I think my parents did away with the long distance for the land line, since I have noticed that they make long distance calls on the cell phone. I know my parents don't have VOIP. The internet and cable can be out, but the phones will still work. Or in my parents case, the phone was out, but they still had internet.

wow...$10 a month is good even when it does go out.
i rarely remember to take my phone out of its little plastic thing (i keep it in there to keep if from getting wet when it rains) and turn it on. when i have three days off like this i like to keep it on during the day though. it never rings though... i did get text the other day as soon as i turned it on. i don't know what they were selling cuz it wasn't anyone i knew.
i surprised myself last week...i found the ring tone thing on the phone and not only was able to test the sounds but set it up so now if it ever DOES ring it will sound like a regular old fashioned phone!! (if it sounded like music or something i never would hear it or know it was the phone!)

Of all the ringtones out there I haven't heard one that sounds like the phones from when I was a kid. That would be the one I'd want if I ever get a phone.

Somebody in the library has their phone set up to croak like frogs, another person has the funeral dirge for when their boss calls them.

Jeane, I think you were thinking phone jack and I think I have seen or heard the commercials for it. I have heard some annoying ringtones.

when i worked at the clothes store one of the make up reps used to have Somewhere over the Rainbow as her ringtone.
i've heard everything.....the folks upstairs, the kids have different rings for everyone.i think i could set my phone like that BUT i don't have people calling and i don't have that much time to waste.

my phone rings just like the old plastic phones that we grew up with ring. brigggg briggg just like a real phone!

I have Green Onions by Booker T. and the MGs as my ringtone. It always makes me smile to hear that jazzy tune.

Yep - $10/mo for home phone service is a terrific price. I wasn't quite ready to give up the home phone, and this made it easier to keep one.

i think i might switch my isp from my computer (the dial up) and get it where its just the 'premium' which i think is 'we'll let you keep your email and name on here but it will cost you about $10' that way when i get it set up for wireless i can switch over to the old isp i always had and still be me. (though i've got to remember to go in there and tell them what's what i want to do before the end of the month!).

Pete, who is head of the program knows. What happens is
these people meet with their probation officers once a month.
If they are in the high double digits or triple digits, the probation
officer gets all over them. What happens is that if they don't finish
their hours within a certain period of time, there is a chance that they
could go to jail.

This is cold hearted. but it is not my problem. The only thing I can do
is put them on the schedule. If they don't show up, I'm not the one
suffering the consequences. As for the work, then I do it and the community
pitches in and helps.

ya know, there are people who should have that same sort of checks and balances even in 'regular' jobs! though maybe their 'punishment' should be to do the jobs that the people who are doing it to stay out of jail don't show up for!
man....i should NEVER run for government!

Yeah, your solution makes too much sense. Can't have any common sense in government now can we?

around here. I've gotten to the point where I don't change
the schedule for the people who don't show up.

You should get a bit extra in your pay envelope for having to do your job and theirs too when they don't show up. After all, you're doing the work of more than one person then. Shame you couldn't get the pay for doing two or more jobs...................imagine the size of the pay for working that day. Shocked
