Movie and T.V. soundtracks

How many of you pay attenetion to the music in movies and
T.V. shows. There is some really good stuff out there but
how many of us pay attention to it. The reason is that I
was watching the Hunt for Red October last night and realized
how effective the human voice is as a musical instrument.

I began paying attention years ago, when I found out that Randy Newman's uncle was Alfred Newman, who scored for many, many movies, including South Pacific, The King and I, How the West was Won, My Darling Clementine, and Camelot. A great musical score can change the soul of the film.

oh a whole chunk of the Newman clan do soundtracks...they're really interesting:) (though i will admit that i preferred the original Monk theme to the one with words Randy did).

I used to collect a lot of soundtracks...esp movie sound tracks. As odd as it may sound the two people who do the best soundtracks (seem to think about it a lot and don't seem to have someone write the music for them) are Quentin Tarantino (I love Reservoir Dogs soundtrack the most but i've nearly worn out Pulp Fiction as well) and The Farrelly Brothers. i know people are gonna gag on this, but Dumb and Dumber is one of my fave soundtracks ever!
if i had to give away all but maybe half a dozen of my sound tracks the ones i'd keep are (in no special order)
Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show (a lot of instrumentals on here but some good sing along songs as well), Austin Powers (the first one), Help, A Hard Day's Night (hey they were both movies:) )
okay...that's 7....i'll keep one of the beatles and take away AUstin Powers if i have to:)

I don't always pay attention to the music in the movie. Maybe I pay a little to much attention to what is going on in the movie to even notice the music. I do like the soundtrack to Schindler's List done by John Williams.

That was a powerful soundtrack to a very powerful movie.
Personally I think John Williams has really gone down hill
since he did Star Wars. Actually of the original Star Wars
series the best one was The Empire Strikes Back.

If you like classic movies then check out the Pink Panther,
Charade, Hatari(sp). All these are fun movies and Henry
Mancini did the soundtracks.

Wesley has the theme from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly as his ringtone. He sometimes gets late night calls on his cell phone, because of the nature of his work, and hearing that eerie song coming from the other room in the dark always gives me a bit of a start.

Music ads so much to movies and tv, it sets the mood and helps propel the story along. A lot of times, the music is a character in itself.

oh the Good the Bad and the Ugly...i can just imagine that coming on in the middle of the night! but maybe better than Who Let the Dogs Out or the CHicken Dance.

Fluff....sometimes the best soundtracks you don't notice simply because they are written so well for the film. the tension increases and the music swells but you don't hear the music because its helping to make you feel tense along with the images on the screen.

there are some great theme music that not only get stuck in your head but live on for decades...like The Good the Bad and the Ugly theme;) And anyone over the age of 40 probably can whistle the theme from Bridge over River Kwai (however its spelled...can't spell but i can whistle the tune!).

Jaws by John Williams. The main title from that may be the most recognizable track from the soundtrack.

AIEIIIIIIII!!!! I cringe when I here that, it was so overworked
and parodied to death. I've been thinking about getting the
20th Century Fox fanfare for a ring tone.

What did I start? Anyone familiar with James Horner's music from Braveheart?

Yes, that was a great track. Remember the movie Rob Roy,
that was a great track. Used a lot of traditional music,
the Chieftans performed most of the music.

ithink i'm the last person to see Braveheart...still haven't seen it!
in another movie section Mel Brooks was brought up..thought i'd bring him over here as well. he had great music in his movies....and some of it he wrote himself! ( did you think anybody else could write the lyrics to Springtime for Hitler???....right now i have the theme from High Anxiety in my head!)

IMO, Woody Allen makes some of the most nuanced and pitch-perfect soundtracks for his movies. They are not anything I'd buy on CD and listen to in the car, but he clearly takes great care to match music to action.

The only soundtrack I ever bought on CD was Living Out Loud. (Nothing to to with Woody!)

Maybe you'd have to see the movie, but I love those old torch songs and Danny Devito singing They Can't Take That Away From Me is a delight!

you know I think I'll put the Producers in my Netflix
list. Wasn't high anxiety a send up of a Hitchcock
movie.

EEEEEEEWWWW Woody Allen is terrible, the only he was good at
was voice over in cartoon about ants.

How about the music from Dances With Wolves? Or Beetlejuice?

Right now I have the theme song from The Greatest American Hero running through my head...............

And I think most of Woody's movies are terrific!

I was thinking about Dances With Wolves yesterday. I don't know how many are familiar with the music from the second X Files movie that was done by Mark Snow.

i haven't seen a woody allen film in years but i can see where he'd be good with the soundtracks ...i bet there is a lot of jazz on them!

when you put in for the Producers on netflix make sure you put in which version you want...one was from the 60s and the other from the 2000s.

and yesh, High Anxiety was his send up of Hitchcock....though i think you can still laugh at it if you don't no any more about Hitchcck than the Birds and Psycho, you'll get more from it the more of his films you know.
oh man....the scene where Mel and Madeline go through the airport is classic! (the Peppy and the Snappy and the ...)

Yesh! And some great stuff, too. I love his early movies. So smart and funny! I eventually got bored with his neuroses and woman addictions and I don't bother with him much any more. But I have to say he's a creative guy. Check out Zelig.
