Re: Fred Friend
The good news is that Fred isn't acting like he's sick. He doesn't drink all the time or pee a lot. The vet thinks he might have accidentally gotten into antifreeze and lived to tell the tale or somehow got injured, and the kidneys are just damaged. I could believe the injury theory with his bad knee and weird scars on his hind end. I seriously wonder if he got hit by a car.

One guess is as good as the other. I'm thinking more like car strike.

Re: Fred Friend
He loves his kidney diet food, so we're on our way to treating what we can. He might regain some function if the cause is injury. If he got accidentally poisoned, the chances are slim. If it's some awful disease, he would probably be acting sick. He's not, so we're pretty comfortable ruling that out without expensive tests.

That's great. Antonio was unbelievably picky. Bud is picky but not even in the same league as Antonio. Hopefully he will regain more function.

Re: Fred Friend
About a different Fred. The only cat food Fred ate was
Alley Cat brand soft cat food. It's been years since I have seen that brand in the store.

I don't think I've ever seen it. Amend that I just googled it. You can still buy it.

Re: Fred Friend
My cats are all about Weruva these days. I had a barn cat who refused everything but Friskies kibble, and he would only eat the star shapes. Cats... I actually think Fred the dog must have some inner cat. He's pretty darned picky. I've never met a dog who refused cookies!

Re: Fred Friend
Bud is actually eating tinned food. Half a can in the morning, half a can at night. These are the snack size tins, you know the ones. You open the can put on the plate, cat looks at you and says THAT'S IT???? Still it gives me a chance to one in the morning to start coffee and get juice, then two in the evening grab wine and start dinner.

Re: Fred Friend
Yup... That's what the kitties here get. They get kibble too, so they share 1/2 a can in the morning and 1/2 a can in the evening. Little tinkers are still a bit pudgy.
Fred is making great strides. He was off leash the whole time I did stalls. He just stayed in the barn aisle or laid in the sun in the doorway. Good dog!

Re: Fred Friend
Fred is scheduled for surgery on 4/19. He gets dropped off in the evening on 4/18 so they can make sure he's well hydrated. Since he has kidney issues, they want to be sure he's well prepped for anesthesia. I need to send a shirt with him so he has my smell to keep him comfortable. Poor guy probably will think he's back in the pound.

Re: Fred Friend
Poor guy. Hopefully the shirt will ease his discomfort. how long does he have to stay? Bud sends healing purrs and you know you have healing vibes from me.

Re: Fred Friend
Fred is fine right now. His leg doesn't work right, but he feels ok. He only needs to stay for one night before surgery, and then should come home shortly after he wakes up. His recovery will all be at home. He will go back 2 weeks after the operation to remove the stitches and for some x-rays to check healing. After that, it's all physical therapy. Our regular vet will handle that. They have a water treadmill, and a whole PT section.

I plan to send a blanket that smells like me. I figure that will be comforting. Hopefully pandemic protections don't prevent that.

Re: Fred Friend
I need to remember to call the surgeon's practice. They have a way for me to pay with CareCredit, but last time we went, I never got their invoice email. I need to figure out what's going on so I can be sure I can actually pay!

Re: Fred Friend
I used credit care for my hearing aids. I drove them nuts because I refused to pay on line

Re: Fred Friend
I got it all sorted with the clinic today. If the electronic payment doesn't work, I can give the tech the card, and he/she will take it in and run it. Curbside service is great, but I feel bad for the techs having to run back and forth so much.

Today we went to the chewy store so he has some stuff to entertain himself while he's in the cone. Poor guy. He's going to be unhappy with that.
