Re: Feral for life
There seems to be no end to natural stupidity. Why is it when it comes to important stuff we seem to be surrounded by stupid people? Poor kitties.............seen any of them lately? How's momma and kit doing after their surgeries?

I don't know i haven't seen them. Things may change when I replant the
catnip.

A new catnip plant will be a sure draw! How can any self-respecting kitty resist an unmolested catnip plant just begging to be eaten?

Re: Feral for life
My enormous nip plant is going to seed. I know it will be back next year, but the kitties are mourning its passing. The leaves are dropping off, which gives them something to munch, but it's not as good as the fresh stuff. They want to visit your plant, Sue!

Re: Feral for life
My sister's catnip plant growing wild in her garden is also full of flowers-starting to go to seed-so I know it will be back next year too. Plenty of fresh leaves yet, and no pesticides either. Just gotta wait until she stops complaining about what was/wasn't done while she was gone last week. All she's done is complain, complain, complain since she got home. Garden wasn't watered (HUH, I watered it 3 times!), mail wasn't brought in (again, it was brought in every single day). Didn't even get so much as a thank you for the total upheaval in mom, Bijoux, or my schedule.............
I'm surprised as big as that catnip plant is that every stray kitty in the county isn't coming to visit her yard.....

You never know, they may have been in it. If that's huge
she might not have noticed the raiding.

Re: Feral for life
i felt like i was sealing up contraban...but the seeds are in the mail...the CATNIP seeds that is;)
mine have never gone to seed. i'm wondering if its because i cut so much on mine....pinch them back when they get high now. last year they sat on the window in the kitchen all winter long and amazingly didn't die! I rarely remembered to water them either...but yet they stayed alive and are growing out on the little deck table as i type!

Jeane, around here it's not only the cats who like it.
I put it in tea and lemonade.

Re: Feral for life
My sis' plant is almost chest-high on me. If a stray kitty came to molest it I'm sure Maggie would bark up a storm to let her know about it. And her kitties would raise a ruckus too with somebody uninvited in their yard.
Sue, did you know catnip is related to mint? That's probably why it's so good in tea.

Yes, I did. In Ascot's last days I tried to get him to nibble
a little to help settle his tummy. The yogurt also helped.

Re: Feral for life
Buddy ate fresh nip pretty much up til the end.
i have tried cat nip tea but not from my own leaves. do you use it fresh or dry it first? (I think i'll try it AFTER i bring the plants in for the winter. i'm always icked out from taking leaves from outside cuz of bug eggs and bug poop and bird poop that could be on them! even when it comes to picking the leaves for the kitties if they look like they have something on them or have been nibbled on by bugs those leaves get thrown off the deck and into the weeds....if a stray kitty gets to them then so be it;)

I just use it as a garnish, so I will only use fresh. I wash
it first.

Re: Feral for life
I've only had the option of making tea from dry, and I use a full tea strainer's worth for each cup (it does take a lot). Has a slight sedative and painkilling effect on us peoples. Tastes pretty good mixed with chamomile too.
My sis's plant is big enough to keep at least a dozen kitties very happy!

That's a huge bed. The one I had in the planter was big
too. Till the Stoner Cats hit.

In hot tea with honey it really is very soothing and will
help settle a gimpy tummy.

Re: Feral for life
Actually that's just one plant! It's absolutely huge! But it's also been there coming up every year for the past 5 years that I know of. I know it's considered an annual that reseeds itself if you let it. Must be great dirt and just the right amount of water and sunshine or something. I've never gotten a plant to grow like that in my entire life. **wistful sigh**

Re: Feral for life
Jeane, package of seeds have arrived. I haven't opened it. I asked Joysanna
the best way to start them. She said either the yogurt cups or I could just even
start them in the big planter. She did warn me that I have to keep them moist.

Re: Feral for life
once theyget settled in and growing you don't have to water them so much. somebody in here (or the other forum that is)told me that catnip likes to have its feet damp but doesn't need to be really soaked.
its not a whole pack, but the seeds are sooooo tiny ...i think that's about half a pack. if you need more let me know...i have some more somewhere(one year i got them so cheap at KMart i think i paid about a nickle a pack so i bought 'em out....got about 6 packs and didn't use more than one and a half or two and a half!)>

Re: Feral for life
Speaking of ferals. I saw two black ones last night.
I don't know if this was the two that TNR'd. I've been
sneaking food and water over to the vacant house late at
night.

I wouldn't be surprised if those two were the mom and kit you had 'fixed'.

Re: Feral for life
ah i know about sneaking the food.....since i've been told NOT to put anything out i've had to throw stuff into the winds in the dark of night. a few nights ago it was a whole bowl of dry food....Judy's kids eat it from the bowls and gave up on it..then nobe got it and what she didn't eat the weed cats got;) I know there has to be kitties living the in the house that was started being built and then the builders ran off with the man's money. there's plenty of kitty room in there!
