Re: Movie Reviews
Watched the John Carter film for about the fourth time. I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for saying this, but I think they made quite a good job of it. I really don't think it was as bad as they made out.
I love the Edgar Rice Burroughs books and the film was true to his vision.

Re: Movie Reviews
Burroughs was a good writer so if it's quite true to the book version......that makes it worth a view anyway. I wonder if the library has that one available.

Re: Movie Reviews
It seems to me (from reading reviews) that a lot of people judged this movie by today's edgy story standards instead of seeing it as a delightfully imaginative 100 year old story brought to life with today's special effects. I want to see it!

Re: Movie Reviews
I'd be interested to see what you think of it.
As you said Suzzzz, it was judged on previous films in the sci fi/fantasy genre and the reviewers generally never took into account that without writers like Burroughs Star Wars et al may not have been made. George Lucas freely admits he was heavily influenced by Burroughs when he was younger.

Re: Movie Reviews
Just finished John Carter. I'm giving it for
reasons that are not Bob's. The acting was not great, then again this is a young cast just
starting out in their craft. Script, not that great but then I'm not familiar with the work that
it was based on. For fun, yes. To me the expectations on this movie were to high, people wanted
something iconic, for me I don't want iconic I want entertainment. So check it out from your local
library.

Re: Movie Reviews
Green Lantern. Now where to start? Firstly many of the reviewers panned the film because they said that the main protagonist, Hal Jordan, came across as unlikeable. He was brash, big headed, put himself first and all in all was not a very nice guy. Newsflash. That's exactly how he was protrayed in the comic books until he got the power ring and realised that (if I may quote from another great comic) 'with great power comes great responsibility'. The screenwriters got his personality spot on.
I thought the storyline was good, okay, a little stringy in parts but that didn't detract from a great story idea. The rest of the casting was wonderful. I loved seeing all the other Green Lanterns on Oa (and trying to identify them was a hoot). Kilowog was excellent, the only disappointment I had was in the portrayal of Tomar Re (of all GL's my favourite). Didn't look quite right, but still at least he was in the film.
I'd happily watch a sequel and give this movie .

I wish you could have posted this review about a week ago. They were going to show it on one of our premium channels, and the satellite company had a teaser weekend last weekend, allowing us to see the premium channels for a few days. I'll keep a look-out for it on your recommendation.
Re: Movie Reviews
Frankenweenie was OK...it wasn't as good as Tim Buton's other animated movies.

I re-watched The Elm-Chanted Forest . It is Croatia's first animated movie (from 1986). It is a very strange movie and certainly low budget...but I love it. I have it on downloaded DVD.

Re: Movie Reviews
Does anybody remember the movie Dark Crystal. It was a Jim Henson production. In
fact I think it was the last one he did before his death. I know I've seen it but has anybody
seen it recently and is it worth a revisit.

Re: Movie Reviews
I remember that one Sue!
Flower, I haven't seen the full length movie Frankenweenie yet but I have seen (and have on tape) the original short version of it that this movie was based on. It was made back in 1984 and I thought it was good. Quite imaginative and a great spoof of the old horror movie monster classics.

Yes, I remember it very well. It's one of my all time favourite films, and the one that prompted me to go to my first Sci-Fi convention in fancy dress. Yes I went as a Skeksis (first costume I ever made).
The effects, for the time, were ground breaking and basically it was a fun film.
Beryl loves it too (she went as Augra).
We watched the DVD only the other night.
ps. I think the last film Jim Henson made was Labyrinth (also worth a look)

Re: Movie Reviews
I'm going to revisit Dark Crystal but I'm going to pass on the other. While good, the camera angles when
ever David Bowie is on screen can be a little disconserting. If you want to know why PM, this is a family forum.
Last weekend I watched To Kill a Mockingbird, I've already rated this and it is a movie well worth owning. On Monday
I watched the Scarlet Pimpernel great British cast, was done in 1999 by A&E. Elizabeth McGovern, who is Lady Cora
in Downton Abbey is the female lead. and Bob you are bit odd.

Re: Movie Reviews
Odd, moi? LOL. You should see some of the other costumes. My Admiral Ackbar (Star Wars) was particularly good.
I know what you mean about the 'camera angles' on Mr Bowie . Comments were made by a film reviewer over here at the time.
I have a copy of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' in my DVD collection. DOn't think Beryl has seen it yet and I know she loves the book (as do I). Shmaybe that will be on the film list for the weekend.

I think I may have to revisit Labyrinth just for the camera angles! LOL! I hardly even remember that movie.
Beryl should see TKAM if only to see the very handsome Gregory Peck! And he's good in the role too!

I saw GL over the weekend and enjoyed it. When I was a kid GL was my favorite comic out of the DC stavle, before the advent of the Marvel superheroes. I honestly don't remember all the other GLs though , and haven't ready GL in almost 50 years LOL

Re: Movie Reviews
over the weekend I also watched some other movies, continuing my watching of old comedies and musicalds from the 30s and 40s.
Saw Golddiggers of 1933 and His Girl friday, starring cary grant and a young, beautiful Rosalind Russell (most known in my day for playing the Mother Superior in one of my favorite films, The Trouble with Angels)I find these movies refreshing because thought there might be innuendo there is no blatant sex like in todays movies. However there was one thing that really disturbed me in His Girl friday, the offhand racism (A throwaway line from one of the reporters about a feature about a "pickaninny" born in a cab on teh way to the hospital.)
