Bo came home today. He went for training and somehow hurt his front leg. He's back at home in a paddock right next to Envoy. They've been playing over the fence and each enjoying their own hay nets.

So Envoy is getting to spend more time with more friends. Will Bo's leg be okay in a little while?

Bo's leg will probably be ok, but he won't ever be as sound as he once was. He injured a suspensory ligament, which is essential to a horse's ability to move correctly. He seems ok, but needs to rest for some more months. He gets his final shockwave treatment next week (I think). After that, the vets will evaluate.

That's too bad. Hopefully the shock treatment and a long layoff will put him
in back into better shape. I knew I hunter that blew a tendon and after a really long, I mean
like over a year he came back fine for the hunt field.

Poor Bo, I hope he recovers well and faster than in a year. Will he get to retire like Sabi?

Re: Envoy's 2012 boarding school tales
Bo's retirement all depends on his progress. If he heals completely, there's no reason he can't have a rewarding career. Since he's young, his chances are good.
Bo and Envoy got into a fight over the fence yesterday. Bo has bite marks on his butt. No one knows what the fight was about, but the two were in separate corners sulking. Envoy wouldn't even go to his hay net because it was too close to Bo. I hope they get over whatever it was. They are both pretty laid back guys, so who knows... Maybe it's the weird warm weather. It's going to be 80 degrees today. It's February for goodness' sake! (Of course, colder weather is on its way, so the funky weather pattern continues.)

With all the weird weather, could they both have had a horsie version of cabin fever? And the frustration that goes with it?

Could it be a "guy" thing? (You know what I mean.) Or maybe hay nets too close for jealous comfort?

Re: Envoy's 2012 boarding school tales
It's probably a guy in spring thing. Their hay nets are a good way apart, so it isn't food jealousy. They are both playful, so they probably just got carried away. It seems like they've calmed down again, and things are back to normal. Thank goodness!

Now, it's too wet to be crazy. We were already saturated, and it's supposed to rain for the next 3 or 4 days. We are fortunate enough to have missed out on the awful weather they got in TN. We have ducks floating in our back pasture now, and where Envoy is has mud mud mud. It's been a weird winter, and it isn't getting any less weird as spring arrives. The mosquitos, oh, the mosquitos!

You get rain, we get heavy wet heartattack snow. We'll have stuff floating in water when it all melts.......and tons of mosquitoes too. With the weird weather we've all had across the country, we'll be lucky to go to the mailbox without being siphoned into anemia by the skeeters..........

Re: Envoy's 2012 boarding school tales
I think spring has officially started to spring. Envoy is shedding hair everywhere. I brought his saddle pads home to wash last night and my washer filled up with hair. This is after I brushed the pads to try to get most of the excess off. Sigh... I love nice, sleek ponies, but shedding is itchy for us and them.
He has found a new trick. His hay net hangs on a fence that divides his paddock in half. He has access to both sides of that fence. So, he starts out by eating from the side the net is on, then he goes around to the other side and eats through the fence. He says this proves that the hay is always greener on the other side of the fence!

I feel you pain with the shedding. I had to chuckle at what Envoy is doing with the hay.

I'm still chuckling at your description of Envoy proving the hay is better on the other side of the fence!

Re: Envoy's 2012 boarding school tales
Envoy's getting some time off. He isn't growing enough hoof in his heel area, and that's causing him to trip when I ride. I am considering putting shoes on for a little while so he can get his feet in better shape and we don't have to lay off for too long. His hoof quality is really good, so this should be a fairly easy fix. He will just wear shoes for a few months so we can wear down the shoes instead of the hooves when we ride.

Re: Envoy's 2012 boarding school tales
I wonder why he isn't growing enough heel......is he wearing them down that much running around riding and stuff? The growth can't keep up?

Re: Envoy's 2012 boarding school tales
We think that he just isn't growing his hooves as fast because of the winter and lack of grass. The riding also wears down hooves. We are going to keep an eye on things and if he is still too short at the next trim time, we'll put shoes on. The farrier is hoping that he will start growing faster as things warm up.
I rode yesterday, and he was wonderful. A few days off did him some real good. I think I'll give him 2 days off each week instead of only one. Maybe I can get caught up on my errands too.

A few days of good meals on sweet spring grass ought to do the trick.
